Me and some mates are riding down to Taunton from Essex tomorrow via A30 (others have suggested avoid A303). Any suggestions of places to stop for coffee or lunch? Thanks

At this time of the year I’d say no need to avoid A303 and I’d recommend Teals farm shop and cafe. It’s alongside the A303 near South Cadbury.

As a fairly regular user of the A303 / M3 between The West Country and London I would agree that the A303 if likely to be fine as most of the tourist traffic has gone now we are into September and the schools are back and mid-week the traffic is relatively light - the only hold up might be as the 303 passes Stone Henge, but I just filter to the front of the merging traffic.
As to stops, would recommend Teals, not the cheapest but a nice setting with dedicated motorcycle parking - much better that the previous option of Macky D’s at Sparkwell services.

It`s no longer the Hilltop Cafe, it`s a trendy deli/cafe now...

Go via the 303, it`s not great at the best of times (major roadworks at Sparkford at the moment) but will still be preferable to the frustratingly slow A30, unless you`ve got lots of time and patience and don`t mind an average speed of 27.5mph....
