I'm heading off touring soon and wanted to ask advice on a comment on the last service sheet on my 1150GSA. The service was October last year and I've covered about 5000 miles since.

The comment was "left hand coil corroded". When I questioned it I was advised to just keep an eye on it. I asked how to remove it and was told it needed a special tool.

My question is, can I do it without a special tool without causing damage, and what do I look for? :nenau

Any help much appreciated to put my mind at rest. :beerjug:

I take it your talking about a twin spark bike, with the coilcaps ?

Special tools to remove it  Did his nose grow when he was telling you this :augie

Pull the sparkplug cap off ( this is also one of the coils on a twin spark) with the tool supplied in the tool kit, or two flat bladed screwdrivers.

the coil cap is located in place with a pushfit clip. Just push the clip down and pull off the coilcap.

It's taken me longer to type this than to remove the coilcap.

Thanks for that, I'll give it a go tonight.

Might be back for more advise when I've seen said corrosion for myself. :thumb2

The corrosion will eventually result in erratic running, it will sound as though it's "stumbling" at tickover and hesitates when you whack open the throttle for a quick overtake.

If in doubt carry a spare or or change it before you go.

Mine ran for a couple weeks and several hundred miles before I got around too having it changed at service time.:beerjug:

Thanks for the advice. Here's a pic of how it looks at the moment but I don't know whether to be concerned about it for the next few thousand miles or not. If it's dodgy then I will replace it before I go but if it's got plenty of life in it then I'm not looking to spend £55 at the moment for the sake of it if you know what I mean. I suppose what I want to know is - how far away is "eventually" in my case?! :nenau

When one of mine packed up it still looked new, I replaced it and within several weeks the other gave up as well!

There is a good chance you will need one sooner rather than later, and judging by the number of people who have had one fail its not a bad idea to have one ready!

Thats just my opinion, it may see you through another few thousand miles... or it may not :nenau

Yeah I think I will air on the side of caution and get a replacement. Especially after seeing Shrimpo's problem:

My photo was better though!

Thanks for your help all. :thumb
