All,

I have asked about this before but not acted on it but I am about to get a dog and now need to act on it. Side cars suitable for a GSA I am thinking along Ural type lines or slightly more purposeful (green lane-ing). It would also make my night duty / early turn commute this winter slightly less hairy....
Is it massively expensive, once its fitted can I take it off and on as I choose? Who builds them? I am off to morocco for the first time in a fortnight so nothings gonna happen this side of November but I think I would like to start planning, I also have a hankering to ride form Vancouver to Buenos Aries at some point and think this might be the perfect set up.
OK may be it makes me slightly odd but I can hack that
:D

There`s lots of Oilhead combos on ADVrider in the Hacks section.

Oilheads need front subframes for sidecar mounting.

Yes,it`s expensive to create an Oilhead combo from scratch...very expensive.

The Ural sidecar is very durable, comfortable and practical.
It has trailing arm suspension as well as big rubber 'donuts' for suspension.
Passenger comfort is good due to a comfy seat and entry /egress is pretty easy too. The screen is effective.
There is a very useful boot behind the passenger and the top is a hinged lid, unlike the Dnepr and Chag Jiang.

If you fit leading links the bike won`t be very nice as a solo,if you were to remove the sidecar.

On a stock Ural combo you can remove the sidecar and chasssis in about 15minutes....not sure what`d be involved with any solo turned into a combo though, and the Oilhead may be dodgy with the front subframe left on.

There are a few Threads on here too, with shortcuts to sidecar manufacturers.

Have you ridden a "Combo" for any distance yet? If you haven't it is something you need to do before you commit.... some people "Do" outfits...some "Don't"....:)

cooo

Hmm may be i need to think about an ural as a hack for a while....
Any one here had one or any thoughts or opinions, I know they are slower than test cricket but hmmmmmmmmmmm

on rideing a combo here is my 2p worth. I never rode one before but I wanted one so I put an add in the wanted section and got a r100/7 with a BIG sidecar some say that its a small caravan anyway I rode/drove it about 130 miles home no problem my 7 year old son fell asleep in it. I dont know how to post photos but if Jaytro reads this he might have one. JJH

Ural combo?

Got two of them,ain`t I.

Daily year round use...all weathers....commuting,shopping,socialising,leisure rides,rallies and holidays. :thumb2

Speed`s relevent and irrelevent....plenty of stuff travels slower than a Ural combo.

I had a combo many years back, a BSA Gold Flash with a single seat Steib chair. It was fun for a while but then I could not see the point. It had all the disadvantages of a bike plus all the disadvantages of a car with very few of the benefits.

You got just as wet and cold as on a bike but still got stuck in traffic, couldn't find anywhere to park and really hard to get your knee down.

To me they were something that had a use when cars were pricey and the average working man could just about afford a motorbike. Sticking a chair on the side meant you could also take the, non-biking, missus out and with a damned great caravan stuck on the side, a couple of kids as well. Then along came the Morris Mini for less than £500 and there was no point in sidecars any more.

:blast

OMG..not THAT old one again.

You miss out the fun element..the something different aspect.

Wear the right gear and you don`t get wet or cold...or even too hot.
On whatever you`re riding.

You don`t often get stuck in traffic...even travelling all over UK,I`ve hardly ever been stuck.....and there`s more than a few knobbers on solos I`ve seen sat in traffic queues over the last few years....
Parking`s no trouble at all.
Knee down....didn`t even have an interest or desire for that whilst a teenager, certainly not now.

Not my bag but I wouldn't condem it. Known a few folk who swear by 'em but I like leaning. There are leaning sidecars! Popular in Europe with all manner of modern bikes.

Also they do topboxes and Doggles for dogs if it's a small 'een.

Once followed a bloke from a Putney Harley dealer down the outside of the traffic when I was a courier. I was on a bike he was on a Harley Servicar:D
