Coolant - top up or renew

On reading the service schedules kindly provided by Jim von B, they regularly require a check of the coolant level.

It doesn't ever mention changing it, when does this happen?

Also if just topping up, with what? Hopefully not Unicorn sweat !

How do we know the concentration is strong enough to prevent freezing?

Any ideas?
 
You can buy a cheap tester that tells you the state of antifreeze.
You can top of with premix antifreeze. You could top with distilled water but don't do this regularly or it won't be strong enough. Don't use tap water especially if you are in an area with hard water. In the spirit of do as I say not what I do I just use tap water but then it's from the finest Scottish springs :-p
 
Currently BMW doesn't have a spec on changing it. That said, I would test it yearly and change it when it no longer is within spec for freezing. This is usually around -20°F , or about -28°C.

I would assume it is similar to auto engine coolant specifically designed for aluminum (aluminium) engines.

Replacing the coolant looks simple enough. But, you may need, a special tool or two:
