As at least some of you know, my F went pop in Morocco and limped back to Spain where I left it to the RAC. Oil temp went mad (160 degrees after 10 minutes at 50 mph, water light on). Having had the thing in bits, I'm honestly stumped:

The thermostat works, a whole 9mm longer and definately open when boiled with a couple of eggs.
Pouring water into the radiator with the drain out gives an unimpeded flow. The radiator is water tight and allows flow.
The water pump impellor turns with the engine on the starter motor.
The oil is black/red not brown. The oil level has not changed and the oil in the reservoir thrashes round when the engine runs. The oil pump seems Ok.
The water level in the tank did not change, yet when you block the overflow and fill it, the water goes along the pipe into the radiator filler cap.

Now, since checking this stuff, I havn't refilled and run the engine, but I can't find a fault. Only thing left that I can think of is the dreaded idea that the water has not been able to flow up the engine due to some blockage inside or there was some sort of vapour lock.

Anybody have any ideas or do I just refill and take it to the dealers if the oil temp still does crazy and the water light comes on?

Don't mention the gallon of petrol and box of matches, I already thought of that!

Airlock perhaps, I know of a brand new 650 that came back after 30 mins with the temp very high and it was an air lock in the cooling system.

Part of the problem at least. A rather unscientific pressure test (hose pipe down the radiator filler) had water pouring out of the gasket behind the waterpump where the clutch lives. No water, no cooling. The oil was contaminated but not that obviously until you get the last dregs out of the sump. The header tank hadn't gone down, but a quick drag on the pipe to start the syphon effect had water spraying out the end like its supposed to. I'd guess if the header hadn't been airlocked, I'd have put in loads of water over the run and the oil would have been properly contaminated.

So, its a trip to Motorworks today for a water pump kit, gasket and oil change kit and see what happens.

Thanks

Andy
