When changing oil and filter, do you guys get the motor hot enough (R1150GS) for the oil cooler thermostat to open?, if not, is there a small amount of oil trapped inside the cooler and pipes which will affect the level once refilled? And when refilling, do you put the amount in as specified in the handbook/manual, or go by a visual check on the oil sight glass?, i am a bit confused!.

Run it until warmed-up, change the oil and filter (pre-filling filter as far as poss.), refill to top of sight glass, run it until hot again and top-up as necessary. Remember to follow the oil-level-check-regime at each stage of this: viz; with warm engine, park on side-stand for at least 5 mins, put on centre-stand on the same bit of tarmac as you always use, leave 5 mins., check oil level.

Phew! Long winded or what? Only way to get consistent level readings.

Erm, I don't think these things have a thermostat, it's more a case of off or not off

Are you sure that,s right?, i understood the 1150GS had an oil cooler thermostat.

Gavin sweetheart just do as the man says. I too haven't heard of a thermostat - if there was one it would go wrong at some point at this site would have various threads associated with the problems of said widget. Nobody else except you seem to be worrying about this. See a doctor!!

There is you know

From page 11.41 on 1150 cd rom manual.

Removing and installing oil thermostat
• Remove screws securing oil cooler line to fairing
bracket.
• Disconnect oil cooler line from crankcase.
• Remove support plate (1), control element (2)
and spring (3).
• Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
X Tightening torque:
M 6 screw ...................................................... 9 Nm

Thanks Kenny, i thought there was. So does the oil cooler hold any oil back, or is it such a small amount that will not affect the level after refilling?

THERMOSTAT?

The R1100GS does not have a thermostat, hence the stories of winter riders on these machines covering-up the oil cooler to try and get oil up to a reasonable temperature. The R1150GS was, however fitted with the thermostat valve from the RT, and as you should have noticed, an 1150 reaches the middle bar on the oil temperature display fairly quickly and stays there - even when air temp. reaches 40deg.C

Temp meter bars

I find that I get 5 bars when riding on the open road and 6 when riding slowly in town (both are only observations from this summer - presumably the air cooling is the difference).

1150GS - only 5 weeks old but already over 2000 miles and loving it!!!

Well bugger me, there is as well, never noticed it b4, but I will now have to find away of making it lift when doing the oil change this week [hot air gun maybe ?]

So back to my original question, does the the cooler thermostat need to be open when changing the oil?, thus allowing ALL the oil to be drained.

yup I would have thought changing all the oil rather than most of the oil would be better
