Ok, so my 2 yr warranty runs out on my 05 plate 12GS in March, so i'm thinking about getting chrimbo out of the way then giving my bike a good inspection to pick out anything and everything i can get replaced under warranty....

To that end, what have been the main areas of corrosion etc from peoples experience so far?

(pics of dodgy areas would be appreciated, as i know where the seat, handlebars, wheels and engine are, much more detail than that and i'm stuffed)

I'm an oscar winning bike knowledge numpty... wash it and ride it, thats me, and not too much of the former either!!!!

cheers peeps....

My warranty runs out in march to & i went round the hole bike as it just about to have it's service, found corrosion on the front cover the size of yous small fingernail + misting of oil under the engine/gearbox joint.
Just got it done on saturday they replaced all the seals in the clutch housing & rear crank seal (they always do all seals as parts are pence) & fitted the latest front cover .:D -- It took 4 hours & i had a loan bike to play on ,the bike looks brand new & it's used all year round

The warranty on my 12GS also runs out in March, so I’ve just bought a new one…:bounce1 :bounce1

£3500 part ex on a shiny new, fully loaded, 2007 Yellow/Gray model.

I know this is of no use to you….but I just wanted to show off.

:hapybnce:

Yes...i know i'm a tosser...:mmmm

Come on guys....

Come on guys.... I can't believe only one 1200 owner has found any corrosion hotspots...

i love my bike, but i'm prepared to admit it's not built perfectly.......

pretty please?

The curved cross-brace on the centre-stand - It's in line for a hammering from grit off the rear wheel - I got a replacement under warranty and taped up the cross-brace on the new one.

Check & grease in the crannies behind the accessory socket on the left hand side of the frame.

On my 3rd timing cover...

Mines at 22,000 miles and two years old in March. Admitadly I try to avoid using it when the roads are at their 'saltiest'. It's the first ever bike I've done that with but, then again, it's the most I have spent on anything, ever, let alone a bike

Any way, to get to the point, there is no corrosion what so ever on mine. If I were you though, I'd be checking the state of the connections to the fuel pump, aux socket and back light. Also the rubber straps that hold the seat height bars in place as they tend to perish. And, as mentioned, the front engine cover.

Other than that, I think the finish on the 1200 is pretty much as good as it gets (given the use of modern water based paints).

Cover on front of engine (Timing) is notorious, I had mine done in June, then the manufacturers warranty ran out but extended warranty kicked in, but apparently corrosion is NOT covered, mine has corroded again in 5 months!

where did you get the work done at .....:thumb :beerjug:

A word of warning in case your dealer is like my (ex) dealer. I thought I was being really efficient (to myself admittedly) by leaving some warranty work until my 20k km service and get all done at the same time.

I was accused of trying to have my bike "refurbished" just as the warranty ran out. I eventually got three out of four items replaced, one was so small (a couple of nuts and bolts) the dealer stood it, the second (bottom of fork had corroded) was goodwill, the third (a misshapen sticker) was taken off my invoice after I protested and the fourth (rusting rear subframe) was not replaced.

My dealer? - Joe Duffy Motorrad, Finglas, Dublin.
The service guy? - Andrew Reeves (posts here as AR14) and describes himself as a "Dustman and Trainee Brain Sugeon". I think he's being very unkind to Dustmen and Trainee Brain Sugeons.

So watch it in leaving your warranty items too late lest it happens to you too.

Let's know how you get on.

where did you get the work done.......

Pidcocks did the work & i was a bit concerned about the frame /engine getting scratched when the gearbox was removed for the oilseal but not a mork on it anywhere :thumb the front cover is the latest updated one so only time will tell (if it goes out of warranty will have it powder coated) .

mine is 12 months old (06 model.....!! ) been used almost everyday. Washed down everyday throughout winter.
Just had front cover, left rocker cover, front brake disc bolts replaced under warranty.(Southport superbikes..... excellent by the way)
the rear brake bracket fixings are rusting. fuel filler cap starting to bubble,
And had to remove the fuel tank last week to install a gps. And the fuel pump ....'my god' all fluffy and white...... !!!!! what a sh*t design . nice little lip to hold all the water......

Seriously thinking of giving up the bike when warranty runs out and get a 1150 Adv.....
Are they any better????

When i wash my bikes in winter i always spray with duck oil after, my bikes all look as good as new inc my 1200.
I have seen some rough 1150's & mint ones to same goes for the 1100
