1150 Adventure.
Fork brace and sliders have gone rotten.
The bike is four years old, fully maintained, clean and garaged. it's done 12000 miles.
BMW have offered me a forkbrace at cost, reducing the bill to sort it all out to a mere £875.

My car cost as much as the bike, is as old and has done 65,000 miles. It goes through a car wash once a month and lives outside. It has 20,000 mile service intervals and looks as good as new.

Any better suggestions than just sucking it up?

Have you looked underneath your car...................:nenau

It bet there's a fair bit of corrosion on the chassis/engine:mmmm

Best thing to do is suck it up and invest in ACF50 for Winter. Spray and ignore:thumb TBH you only tend to see the corrosion closeup anyway!

.... and hello to you too Neil Cunningham. Nice introduction.

I'll move your post for you. This area is for newbies introducing themselves to the site and giving a little background information about themselves.

A 'meeting and greeting' place.

Enjoy your stay with us all the same :)

They all do that sir! :(

Welcome to the myth that BMWs have a good finish! My lower fork brace and the fork leg lowers of my '02 model are the same. I noticed a tiny mark last August and now the whole brace is riddled bubbles. Mine is used all year round, is washed regularly to keep salt off and I used AC50 or a similar protective spray and still mine suffers corrosion. I certainly am not paying BMWs extortionate "good-will" fees for a basic flaw, so it's dremel time and finish with a nice coat of Hammerite Smoothcote Silver for me :thumb2

As he said above, just use Smooth Hammerite in silver.

Oi! Duchess, 5 posts ahead of me then.

:nenau Sell it and buy a Honda.
I'm going to get the rotten bits powder coated on mine when they get bad enough to bug me.

Could I butt in gentlemen please?:)
I have the same corrosion problem and am just researching the best way to tackle it.
Do you recommend brush or aerosol? And is this stuff a good enough match for the alternator cover?

While I’m here :D are there any tips on doing these jobs?

Thank you in anticip ation

Hey ho - how depressing. Thanks for the tips though. Stripping it all down, getting the bits powder coated and then putting it all back together is well beyond my mechanical abilities, but does sound like the way to go.

Can anybody recommend a place in West Kent or thereabouts to get the work done, and perhaps guess the cost?

Thanks for putting this in the right place for me.

take off the fork brace strip down to the bare metal and spray with smoothrite silver.. its enamel so it will etch in and goes off hard like.. build up the coats giving plwenty of time for the paint to go off.

whilst your at it do the fork bottoms too its worth the effort!!:rob

but dont listen to those honda lovers..:augie

One of the most asked q on this site.
I took mine off stripped them, undercoat with Hammerite, painted with hammerite smooth then finished by rubbing down and spraying with hammerite smooth. lasted a whole winters riding un marked:thumb

Lads, lads,
This is all part of the cachet of owning a b'em.
