Hi all, I have a 2005 1200GS. went for a spin this morning, got about 5 miles and the bike just died. All the electrics seem to work, and there were no warnings on the screen. I wondered if this has happened to anyone else?
When cold it starts up again, lasts about 5 minutes and dies again.

Thanks for any help.

Chris.

First stop would be to check out this forum for issues relating to the fuel pump controller- gives symptoms of running out of fuel and can be intermittent. You can check it's the culprit either by substitution or bypassing it.

Older FPCs had silver aluminium bodies- they tend to be the ones that fail and often accumulate water underneath.

That's the FPC for sure and is trivial to replace but yours would seem to be intermittant- the fact that you can start up and ride for a few miles before it conks out means it could be a number of things- a bad fuel pump, blocked filter or kinked fuel hose.

If you've been riding the bike for a while without any problem then it's unlikely to be a kinked or mis-routed fuel hose but if you've just had the bike serviced or just bought it then it is a possibility.

If you can't hear the fuel pump buzz for a second or two after turning on the ignition while it's misbehaving then you might indeed have a bad pump or controller ....but that'll be hard to prove if you can't easily replicate the problem.

If the fuel pump is working OK then you might be into other heat-related problems- bad cam/crank sensor or even sidestand switch which would conspire to kill the spark. I'd try to eliminate the fuel pump and controller first though which have a lot of history... you still need to isolate whether it's a fuel problem or ignition.
