Couple of simple questions from a newbie...

Hey folks,
Due to pick up my new 1150GS in a week or so, but pondering the following:

1. How is it, that after ripping out the cat, putting in a Y piece and an aftermarket exhaust, that a new fuel map (chip) is not required?

Given that there has to be better breathing going on, it suggests that the mixture will now be a little lean - so what's the deal with the advice of my dealer to stay with the original chip & maps? Or are they just on planet "Dealer" which has different laws of physics to the rest of us?

Which brings me nicely to my next point...

2. What, in simple terms is the catalytic converter and what is it's purpose? I've also seen mention of the "code plug" in posts about fitting a new Y piece - can someone explain (please) the significance of how all this ties together on a GS? Or perhaps point me at resources that do... Sorry if this is all covered elsewhere, I have looked but didn't find this particular wrinkle!

I've got a chipped and race-cann'd Ducati 996, so I do understand the process - I'm just unfamiliar with the GS variation on this particular theme.

Actually when my dealer seviced my bike
he said it was running slightly rich due to the
y piece

The engine management unit standard on the bike monitors gas exchange via the Lambda sensor and will adjust the mixture accordingly. That's why it's imperative to re-fit the sensor if you junk the CAT and fit a Y-piece. You don't need a new chip.

Okay, that makes sense. there's no gas sensor on the Duc, hence the need for a new chip.

I found a good discussion on the whole Remus can thing last night and that pretty much tidied up the last remaining questions.
