hi all, i want to fit crash bars to mt 1150gs not sure which are the best can anybody advise me many thanks kingo.

Protection

Steptoe's head gaurds with out a doubt.

I went for the sw motech ones.

But you have to remove the bottom brace to get sump guard off

I fitted Hepco & Becher bars about 3 years ago, tried them out in spain this year, did a very good job. Bars were ground away but very little damage to the GS!

It's fine to say that but the bleedin' things are unobtainable :D His latest (and I think final?) batch sold out within minutes and they hardly ever appear second hand. It took me two years to find some second hand ones and they had some slight scarring from having done their job (however it filed out nicely and with a coat of satin black they look great).

If kingo wants engine protection and doesn't want to spend two years looking for Steptoe's head guards then engine bars are probably a better option ;)

With regards to which make, I'll leave others to make recommendations but whichever I bought, I'd try to make sure they didn't get in the way of routine service tasks (rocker cover removal, sump guard removal and engine front cover removal). The ones that were fitted to my 1100 when I bought it were a complete pain in the backside as you couldn't remove the rocker covers without loosening the engine bars and levering them out of the way and it was impossible to remove the engine front cover without taking the bars off completely (which meant removing the tank) :blast

From the images on the Stalhkoffer website it looks like the ADV tank size is the limiting factor for the full set of crash bars. Ask Bernie for the head gaurds alone. :thumb

I think you must have had Hepco & Becker, My 1100 had them on when I bought it. Having had to remove them to get the alternator belt cover off they never went back on again. Stupid design.

That's why it's a good idea to make a removable centre section for them, they're the best crash bars imo:thumb

Had the H&B and they worked well and saved me and the bike, now have SW Motec as they look a little more thought out.

As for removal, you know when your servicing, you don't know when some twat will knock you off, bars and panniers saved my leg.:censor:

Once you've removed the cover cut it in half across the centre of the cover from side to side with a fine jigsaw blade. :thumb

Saves having to remove any bars in future, and you can't see the join when it's bolted back in place.

I don't think they were H&B but I've no idea what they actually were as they were completely unbranded and had been on the bike from new 17 years ago (fitted by the supplying dealer). I've never seen any others quite like them (which probably says a lot!). Pig ugly things too.

Too late for me now though as I binned the bars and fitted some of your headguards.

The weight of the things when I took them off was unbelievable - certainly built to last...

Looking at those Matt, the alternator belt cover would come off easily with the bars in situ:thumb

It looks like it doesn't it? - trust me - it didn't ;)

The telelever stopped the cover pulling far enough forward to clear the bar. No amount of Chinese puzzle like manipulating or bending to the point of snapping the cover in two worked - I had to remove one side of the bars and the link piece that joined them.

I'd still like some sort of engine bar but It seems they're all compromised in some way?...
