Hmm, took the 1150GSA [54 reg, just 30k miles] for service and noticed rear end was creaking on compression of suspension. Looked on these venerable pages and pointed in direction of paralever bearings but noise is around gaiter where pivot is at rear end, recently had seal replaced under warranty. Took back to BMW for detailed investigation and now being advised that it is "Trunnion bearings" and maybe need big bearing thing also! I
had a look for trunnion bearings on here but unable to find. WTF are they?
anyone else had similar creaking and it not be paralever brgs?
Could the paralever bearings be sending the noise down tube to throw me off scent!
being advised it is "minimum 4 hrs" labour at BMW rates!!!! F. K. Nell
all sugesstions greatfully received,
Thanks in advance Paul RB
cant have the Black Beastie sick now can we?

Trunnion bearings are the Paralever bearings at the joint ahead of the final drive. The outside one is fixed, the inner is adjustable.

Plenty of advice here abouts on adjustment and replacement if needed.

Hi,
I had a similar noise on my 1150. The mechanic who carried out my MOT told me that the noise comes from the rear shock. Regarding to him it is neraly worn and requires to be replaced:mad:.
I am just in the process to order a new shock now.

Ah ha, only being partially lazy / numpty, first thing i did was remove shock and bounce around - ok, copaslip on bolts, sail lube on rubber bits, no change.
I thought Paralever was where the swing arm pivots from, noise is nowhere near there!
Thanks for prompt advice to all so far.

That's the swing-arm pivot, spookily.

There are at least a couple of threads, with photos, detailing what you need.

Mike is most likely correct here. Adjust the paralever bearings and all should be well again. :thumb2

It's 100% your paralever bearings. And as mike says, they are the bearings near the gaiter, the bearings you think are the paralever bearings are the swingarm bearings.

If they are squeaking you'll need to change them, adjusting won't do any good.

Does the mechanic know BMW's very well ??.

Another vote for paralever bearings. Can you feel the steps if you pump the rear end slowly, as the needle rollers jump the notches worn in the ruined races? I could when mine got noisy, hence replacement rather than adjustment.

Ah Ha - "Trunnions" must be Southport speak for Paralever bearings!
Ordered replacements and booked in.
Thankyou all, for your posts

Why not take it to Roy Gardener at RGM to see what his thoughts are? Not too far from you.

Only found Roy's details last night, he seems to have good recommendation, I will call in when over that way next. However have always had excellent service from Southport so they have the job.
Will bear RGM in mind for further work.
Thanks for details, regards Paul RB

I have had this exact problem.

I changed the Paralever bearing with Roy at RGM but this did not stop the noise.

I have decided to live with it, i have since been to France and back and the bike is running fine.

Trunnion Bearings

Just changed the trunnion bearings recently so I know they are spot on, but my GSA has just started creaking at the r'send on compression. If you bounce up and down on the seat it sounds like squeeking springs. It aslo creaks on breaking not to bad but is driving me nuts. Just can't see it being the trunnion bearings anyone had this and it has been the rear shock, when you changed the trunnion bearings did it get rid of it?.......cheers

Update ~ mine were the "Trunnions" - AKA paralever bearings and carriers. Took around 1hr 30! bit better that the BMW 4hr quote. all is well and quiet thanks again for all asistance

Well it seems he was probably right this time :thumb. I have replaced the worn rear shock against a new Wilbers. What a difference this made :clap.
Not only the creaking noise is gone. Finally I have full confidence again in the rear end. The wobbly feeling is completely gone. And I suspected the tyre and exessive play of the swing arm bearings after I had changed the final drive bearings a few weeks earlier.:blast.
Does anyone know if there is a possibility to get the original shock refurbished? I would need a spare one when I have to send the Wilbers away for servicing every 2 years :augie.

My Adv has developed a creaky noise at the paralever bearings and there is some movement in the wheel whilst brake on. So I'm assuming my ADV requires the same "treatment", if the dealer is not takin the pi$$ I will get mine done at the dealer. What did the bill come to? Do you have a contact no for the dealer?
Cheers

I think that Steptoe has a contact who can rebuild the standard GS shock. :thumb2
