So... there seem to be cromed and non cromed... does this involve both the end pipe and the thin pipes?

Any photos to compare? I seem to find only the chromed one - but I believe I would like the non-chromed better...

And what happens to the non-chromed after a few 1000's of miles?

NLS,

Where do you get this from? It's definately not on the options list..? I'd guess, that if there are different types of exhausts, one might be pre-production, and the other production...?

There seems to be an option available to have the pipes coming out of the cylinders chromed or in blank stainless steel.

I would save myself the money and go for non-chromed. I read a discussion about this on the german boxer forum. The chromed pipes seem to turn blue and the non-chromed ones brown. (Although there is one who claims that his non-chromed pipes also turn blue)

How come no-one ever seems to use Solvol on their pipes once a week? My exhaust headers are bright and shiny but only because I put a few minutes of work in regularly.

Non-chromed after a few hundred miles.

Sorted.............

...........according to the 2004 BMW 'R' Series Accessories & Options catalogue (publication #411 200 521):

R1200GS chrome manifold is listed as a factory option, code 340, with price listed as POA.....

We can assume from that stainless steel is the standard spec......??

Mildly abrasive paste, comes in a tube, available in any automotive outlet eg Halford's full title Solvol Autosol. Requires further appliction of elbow grease

Also known as "bling-bling-paste" - but only use that term when you're near a Vauxhall Corsa with neon lights turned on...

Dead right Tobers, although it's bloody hard work. I've tried using wonder wheels (the alloy wheel cleaner) on the down pipes and then a quick buff with Aotosol and this makes the job a lot easier. Just don't get the wonder wheels on the plastic and make sure you rinse is off well as I think it is mild sulphuric acid.
It get the pipes quite shiny with minimal effort.
Shiny is better than rusty brown but the mid way sort of shiny straw colour is quite nice too and anyway I didn't buy the bike to polish it!

And here's me thinking I was the only one to do that :thumb

Probably not as someone on here (maybe you, if so thanks) told me this trick when I first got the GS. It certainly saves on the elbow grease (& the autosol):D
