Can any body help my old bike bmw 1100r. which i sold to a friend of mine has failed the mot. He thinks its the crown wheel output bearing. Is it an easy job to do the haynes manual says take it to a dealer. My friend is good with british bikes old bmw, s. but never took a new bm bevel box apart before.thanks a lot john.

take the wheel off, undo the rear brake caliper and tuck it out of the way.

Drain the oil from the bevel, undo the 8 bolts that hold the bevel face on , tap it off with a soft mallet, carefull the inner doesn't drop out .

You'll see the bearing on the crown wheel, its shimmed, so check that it is the bearing that u/s .

Before splitting the bevel, check its not play in the paralever pivot, this can also be adjusted a certain amount, you don't even have to take the wheel off, its the inner bearing/pin on the swingarm that you adjust.

this is the paralever pivot pin

WOW thats good service you stripped one down just to show John how to do it.:D

just happened to be working on one .

:D :D

And good business sence too. After some of us have had a go we will bring the bits to you:D

mmmmm....

my airhead (R80G/S) has a wobbly rear.
i stripped the bevel drive and it looks the same as that one. do i change the bearing and the shim or just the bearing. i couldn't feel any play in the bearing when it was apart.
i think i know how to use marking blue to get the shimming right.

try re- shimming it, will only cost you pennies, rather than the cost of the bearing !
