Hi I'm thinking of putting one of the bib crud guards on my 1200 GSA to keep the crap out does anyone know wether these affect the engine cooling chers

No they don't.

It won't affect cooling but you could make a guard using woven stainless wire mesh. 1mm x 5mm pitch will stop road grit and costs very little.

However my front cover might have some stone chips but the real damage seems to have been caused by corrosion from under the belt cover. It probably fretted into the paint with vibration.
