can these be created and uploaded to my 2610, or do they have to be created on the unit?

I suspect the latter is the answer Eddy....I asked a similar question months ago relating to a quest and wanting to exclude the congestion charge zone for when in the cage.....no one was able to tell me how to do it so I concluded it wasn't possible.

MapSource 6.6.0 Beta is your friend...

Edit, Preferences, Routing tab, Manage Route Avoidances button...

You can select roads, or define areas to avoid. You have to break the congestion zone down into a few sections, because you can only draw rectangles...

Andy.

Nice one

As marking is either by a area (square) or specific roads I'd think the tool is still a little rough for the congestion charge work?

But definately better than trying it on the unit. A giant step forward.

But-

I find that depsite the bennefits of being able to open muliple instances of Mapsource, a downside is the way that as a shell application it carries the preferences last set.

Why is this an issue for me? If I establish a route form A to B and my preference is to avoid Motorways, I do it, save it and then fancy another route, but this time the shortest or fastes etc, I have to set new preferences before calculating. Open the original and add a via and the recalc uses th eshortest or fastes or whatever my last set was, not how it was originally calculated.

Same with these avoidances. Once set, they are a preference that can't be saved seperately and only applied to some calcs.

I got the con charge area down to 7 boxes - a big square in the middle, and then filling in the gaps round the edges with smaller rectangles. You don't have to fill the whole area precisely, just make sure that the exclusions hit all the roads as near as possible to the border (Inner Ring Road)

I don't know how you could resolve the problem about turning avoidances on or off, other than having an option to do so for each route. Maybe it's worth feeding back to Garmin, that's one of the reasons for beta releases.

I will feed back that niggle to Garmin.

I have a work around, whicih is to have mapsource on my laptop with avoids and on my PC without.... not ideal, but it works (and with the other associated preferences, but no doubt there'll be a clash in my requirements along the way)

I have just checked, the preferences are user specific.

So, if you create another user account on your pc, you can create another set of preferences on the same machine. You need to unlock the maps again for the new user, you can do this on as many MapSource installs as you like, because the lock applies to the GPS, not the pc software.

User switching also works, so you can be running MapSource twice (or more) with different routing preferences set and just switch users (rather than logging off) to access them. You can also upload routes etc with both users logged on, because the 2610 is available all the time and is detected by each MapSource session.

The only downside is that you can't copy/paste between users.

You could therefore have as many sets of preferences as you liked, each under its own user account. You could create multiple versions of the same routes just by opening the same file in the relevent set of preferences and recalculating them.. A-B avoiding motorways, with additional vias, quickest, shortest etc.

Has to be better than running two machines!

Thanks Metro. Interesting work around.

I'll see what Garmin come back with. 2 machines or multiple user accounts, it's not ideal eh?!
