Custom Moulded Music on Yer Bike....

I have been playing around with some Silicone in an effort to make some cost effective Ear Plugs with easy to obtain in Ear Speakers......

Using a pair of Sony MDREX71SLB.. see them here for the spec, http://products.sony.co.uk/productdetail.asp?id=__2638&search=fontopia and a bit of shapely soft stuff, I have made some very effective Plugs.

They sound excellent and combined with a custom moulding of ones Lug'ol, work extremely well at delivering on Bike Musical Vibes/Intercom speech as well as protecting your hearing from loud Helmet noises.

They are easily removed from the Plug so that you can still use them for 'Normal' listening as well as 'On Bike'

I must stress that these are 'My Concoction' and not listed by Greenleopard, for whom we are Resellers....

So if anyone where to require a pair, it would be a wee trip to Perth so that I could 'Stick-it-in-your-ear'

It would cost you £40.00 plus the 'Sonys'.

You could bring/buy your own Sonys or I will provide a Brand new Pair at cost ........

If they knock out wind noise enabling you to listen to music without using Volume 11 or Dobly, (spinal tap if anybody is following) I think its a great idea...
I used to listen to music on the bike but have been so concerned about the noise and music volume necessary that now I don't dare as I know I'm doing my ears in.

I used to listen to music on the bike but have been so concerned about the noise and music volume necessary that now I don't dare as I know I'm doing my ears in.

I had my ears stuffed with stuff on weds by those people Judge is always harping on abut ...so I'm not in the market but would have some concerns for your enterprise CC.....

(And genuine concerns rather than being gripes or negative reactions...meant in the best possible way!)

1) The chappy used a proper gadget for looking in my ear canal before he'd squirt stuff in there......I'm not 100% sure what he was looking for but there had to be a reason for it.....i guess linked to medical type things/problems......

2) Sillicone can be quite nasty depending on the solvent delivery system....I use the stuff at work and it can cause major irritation etc.....they use medical grade and presumably fully tested stuff where i got mine done....

3) Just guessing but the output from any in-ear speaker with a lot of sealant around the canal could be very damaging if at the wrong level.......I'd guess the level needed would be considerably less than that from normal earphones

4) Hearing loss/damage in our modern litigious society would potentially hugely expensive.....your PL insurance covers it?

Presumably your green leopard stuff covers most of this and I've no doubt you've covered the other bits- but if you haven't , proceed with caution......

They charged me 136 quid for a casting and a mod to my autocom system for my custom plugs....if you can do that for less and still be safe and as effective as I hope these ones i've got coming should be, then bloody good luck with it...i suspect you'll have a nice little niche market!!!

I have both the earphones, an earlier version without the seperate extension cord, and moulds of my ear canals. However the moulds were made up by the audiology dept (for the impressions) and the dental techs (for the actual moulds. They have not worked as well as expected and dont get used much (they are much larger outside the ear than your moulds and might just need some shaping). If I were to try and bore out some space to fit the earphones what is the best method and would I neeed to drill through the mould to create a channel into the ear canal. Or if, as I suspect, the earphones are lodged into the silicone before it has set where might I get suitable silicon from to try that method out. Any other tips greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your concerns, it was my mistake making the whole operation sound a bit light-hearted.....

Let me assure you and all others that may be interested.........

I am Fully Trained in making the Ear Moulds...............I am the Reseller for 'Greenleopard.co.uk' in Scotland as I said in my intial Post.

I too would check in your ears with a 'Proper Gadget' (otherwise known as an 'Ottoscope') as you put it, prior to going any Further.

I would be checking for a Build up of Wax, any foreign objects that may not be known about (you may laugh, but it happens), any obvious sign of injury/inflammation.

I would also seek a brief recent Medical History, i.e. Cold/Hayfever/Flu (this could cause your Ear Canal to swell thus making the fitting a bit pointless as when they go back to normal, the moulded plugs will be slack), any operations at least within the previous 6mths.

I'm a bit concerned that you didn't mention this, I ask All my Clients a set menu of Questions, I'd have thought that you would have remembered these questions had they been asked only a couple of Days ago??

You should be "100% aware " as you put it, of what is going on at all times, my Clients are.

Were you made aware that as you get older, the fit of the Plugs may alter as the Ear continues to grow......?

Only once I was completely satisfied that it was safe for the Client to receive the Silicone, would I go ahead with the Process.

As to volume levels..........

It's a bit subjective to the individual really..........some like it loud and some not. It also depends on the source to a degree.

A bit like riding your bike really, you know how fast it will go, but if you overcook it, do you blame the Manufacturer for your over indulgence of speed?

I use my Ipod with these Sony's in the Moulds and run it at 'Full Chat'.

That is in part due to my Hearing loss over the years of Riding M/Cs and Not wearing any sort of Protection and now having Tinitus and damaged hearing.

Also in part due to the Ipod, it is known for being a bit "Shy" on output anyway.

The Sony's are not Tweaked to produce more Volume, so the warnings that come with units still apply......

The thing is, with these moulds, the volume of Music/Speech doesn't have the fight to overcome the outside noises that Helmet speakers do, so consequently, the volume should be reduced overall to a more "Normal" level.....

In essence, these moulds are doing exactly the same job as the ones you have been fitted for, in fact, I can supply that sort too.

Just knowing that Bikers are always looking for a "Good Deal"....

I have come up with these Moulds that will do the same job, with Units that have better Frequency Range and can be used for other applications as well as being Cheaper to the client.

As can be seen in the photo, they are not as flat as other more discreet versions. That said, they are not proud of the Ear Bowl, so there should be no need to remove any of the soft foam from behind the helmet lining.

The Sony's need to be exposed at the rear to produce the Bass Frequencies, that's why they are openly on view. This has the advantage of them being able to be extracted from the 'Plug' to be used in other situations if required, anyway, when wearing the Lid, who cares what they look like eh?

I do not alter Intercom systems because there are too many different ones to get to know, plus as I am not a "Trained Electrical Engineer", if something were to go wrong..........

On my own Autocom I have simply cut the Speaker wires and soldered a 3.5mm Stereo socket to the wire ends, there are only three.The Sony's simply plug into that.

The 3.5mm socket sits just inside the skirt of my Lid held in place by Velcro....very effective, has been like that for years....

I hope I have allayed any concerns that you may have had as to my Professionalism, the care and concern I offer to my Clients....

But thanks for pointing out that the need was there to show it.
