I'm heading over 2 Cyprus for a couple of weeks at the end of the month. We are staying in the north , the Turkish part , near Kyrenia but flying in to Larnaca in the south. Does anyone know if it is possible to rent a car in the south and cross the border with it into the north ? I understand the border is now open but to what extent can you cross ?

Gecko,

I served in Cyprus for two years back in 1997. At that time the border was obviously closed. It is now open :thumb2

There are plenty of places in Larnaca to hire a car but maybe just check that the insurance is valid for driving into the north. This is something that we had to get (cover note) when we visited the north!.

Maybe that has changed now also but still check.

Kyrenia is a really nice place BTW..Enjoy your stay

No problem with the crossing but hire companies in the south do not want the hassle of recovering a vehicle from over the "border" so will require you to sign that you will not take the car across

The best bet is to have a hire car outfit in the north meet you at Larnaca airport and drive you to Kyrenia

Whatever you do, do drive up the Panhandle (Karpass) and visit the area around Rizacarpaso - amazing beaches and as yet untouched. Excellent cafe at the old Roman harbour just north of the above town. Also the drive from East to west along the mountains from St Hilarion castle is well worth doing

Superb restaurant inside Bellapais Abbey itself - forgotten the name

If you are hiring a car I would suggest a FWD as there are lots of sandy tracks down to the beaches (well) east of Kyrenia

Cheers guys. Sound advice as always from UKGSER's :thumb2
Gonna get me a nice 4x4 to play with :D

Not from a Turkish hire company you're not. You might get an old Renault 9, or Hyundai something or another, but I've never seen any 4x4's for hire, unless someone's started renting 200,000 mile Suzukis. Taxes on cars in Turkey is ridiculous, so most hire companies only offer cheapies, unless your willing to pay through the nose.

Border crossings and car insurance

Yes, as others have said, you can take a south Cyprus hire car into North Cyprus, and yes, you do need to buy additional insurance at the border. Not all south Cyprus car hire firms ask you not to travel to the north - try this site which is linked to an independent south Cyprus firm: cyprus-car (dot com). They have lots of 4x4s, including brand new Rav 4s. Lots of info on North Cyprus at cyprus44 (dot com), and their forum has good information on border crossings from residents and visitors alike.

Enjoy your time in North Cyprus - I love it!

Got me a 3 year old Suzuki Vitara hard top with airco for £22 p/day all in - that'll do nicely :thumb2
