Daft (??) Question - Filling With Fuel

Hi Folks,
First GS recently (2001 1150), love the damn thing (original plan was to sell it on at a profit!).

I've got my head round most of the stuff, just finished a service etc. - finding it pretty easy to work on.

Silly question: When I fill with petrol, I find it difficult not to spray it everywhere. If I put the nozzle inside the filler insert, the petrol pump keeps cutting out and it takes ages to fill. If I try and fill it with the nozzle outside the insert, petrol wazzes everywhere!

I would guess it's my technique (or lack of it) rather than any kind of fault.

Advice (& no doubt piss-takes) please...?

Filling

Obvious answer, it aint a car just take it easier with the hand pressing the trigger.
 
I took the filler cap assembly out, and cut/flattened to inner bit so there was no lip.. much better, I also drilled three holes around the top of the 'inner' so that it would prevent air pressure building up and allowing tank to fill quicker.
 
Always an issue with 1150's.Take care with the trigger if the pump pressure is high. Some pumps are easier than others.There's nothing wrong with your bike.

Sounds like worth trying - 2 questions?
1) Can you be more specific re "cut/flattened to inner bit so there was no lip"?
2) I have read about drilling vent holes in the top of the inner, but seemingly if you do, then petrol overflows if you fill it to the brim and put it on the sidestand - is this true?

OK, when you look into the filler neck, you'll see where it narrows so that only an unleaded pump nozzle will fit.
This is the lip I'm talking about (and the cause of many 'spraying' incidents), I removed this 'lip' by cutting the bottom 1/2 inch or so off the bottom of the neck... thus removing this 'lip' or perhaps 'ledge' might be a better description,
If this isn't clear (very possible :D).. I'll take some photos tomorrow.

Regarding the overflow bit this can happen if you don't ride off straight away (after paying first...) or if it's very hot.. it's worth it though.
 
Had the same issue - very simple solution. When you fill up, sick the nozzle all the way in, handle towards the front of the bike, but position the nozzle as though your trying to spray the petrol 'under the seat', ie towards the back of the fuel tank.

Always cuts out when full and never sprays out
 
turn the complete filler cap round, takes 2 mins and helps a bit

Thanks chaps, did the remove the lip thing and drilled one hole, on the RHS so it slopes away when on the sidestand, all is well.
