BMW Park Lane have kindly given me 1200 GS as a loan bike as if I need any more encouragement to upgrade! But given the fuel consumption on my 50 mile trip home I think the choke may be on. Firstly do they have a manual choke and if so, were the hell is it because I cant seem to find it .

No - enrichment is entirely automatic. It should do about 45 / 50 mpg. Dont try working it out from the fuel guage. All that does is tell you when its full and when its empty - inbetween, the scale is meaningless.
