Hi All,

Anyone got a really good close up piccy of the GSD (05) SIDE STAND? the wire has broken off mine and a mate is going to weld in a new bit, but i dont know what angle it is supposed to be set at etc... Cheers, Steve :beerjug:

Hi Smudge

At great personal discomfort I left my bier and went outside and took these piccies! The wire wants to be about 45 degrees... too verticle and you can't get your heel onto to it to operate the side stand. Too horizontal and your bloody foot just slips off it.

I know this because the girlfriend been having trouble with hers (the side stand silly  ) because the loop has gone soft at the welds and will soon break off :)

Don't forget to disconnect the battery, or remove the stand, if electric welding

Nope... nowt! 35,000 miles and going great. Off to Scotland for a couple of days Wednesday with girlfriend. Her F650 now done 70,000 miles plus and going great too :thumb

Mods? ... loads! Wilbers suspension, Touratech lights, extended sumpguards etc. smaller (19") GS front wheel for normal road use... it's a hoot now on the twisties, plays with the 'big boys' and torments 'em silly :D

Does everything an 1150/1200 will do except maybe tour two up long distance motorway work! As an aside, playing a couple of weeks ago, in Germany, with an 1150 and a 1200, not only did it keep up with them, when we re-fuelled it took 7 litres, yes 7 litres less, than the 1150... pissed him off it did! Got a 1200GS-A on order though, but the Dakar won't be going... no way :nono

Take care... have a great New Year :beerjug:

I just had a new set of cush drive rubbers fitted, transformed the bike :D , feels like a 2000 mile bike now!

Any pics of your mods Micky? I have fitted a BMW engine bar set to mine, and because it was a bit beaten up when I got it I have taken all the bodywork off and sent it off to be 'tarted up'.

I waqs thinking about changing the colour scheme next year, maybe matt black? :nenau

My engine has a very heavy knock until it reaches about 3000 rpm, not having owned a 'single' before, is this normal? It does not sound worrying although it would be nice to be re-assured.

Cheers, Steve. :beerjug:

Hi Steve

Could start our own club here! The 'knocking' I'm not sure of, mine is very smooth, much smoother than the single spark versions. Yours could be a 'lazy' timing chain tensioner.. had to take mine out a couple of times and clean it! Piccie attached of mine. Loved the blue and silver as it was, just didn't like the way they did it... probably the graphics guy was told at 3.30pm on a Friday afternoon to hurry up, they were shutting shop and going home! Came home from Mongolia and painted the panels on mine... well I did promise her a new coat travelling south through the Gobi!

Also refitted the BM engine bars since the piccie was taken. Remus exhaust is much lighter, sounds a little pop pop popier than normal but is free'er flowing, along with Wunderlich 'Blue' air filter... the bike's a hoot :thumb

The 19" front wheel, with the long travel Dakar suspension makes the 'bike handle great. With the 21"(great for off road etc.) the 'bike wanted to drop in to the corners, always secure, always OK, just felt iffy! The 19" rim and she handles the twisties great! Will put the 21" back in for the next trip though :eek

Hope this helps...

Looks very good mate, is the centre stand a modded one or a Dakar one? Where did you get the stickers on the swing arm from? mine is a bit scratched and rather than paint it up I would like to put a couple of them on, not really a sticker person but they do have their uses!

I am leaving the panels the original colour for now but as 1 side DAKAR decal is missing, I am looking for a DAKAR replacement sticker, it will have to be a big decal, any ideas?

Also do you leave the front mudguard on when you fit the big wheel?

:beerjug: Steve.

Howdy

Mainstand is Touratech. Originally had a Wunderlich one fitted but it got in the way cornering, causing sparks and the back wheel to move out on the twisties... so it had to go

Stickers on the swing arm are my own, done by a pal of a mate...

Front mudguard moves up, with spacers, when 21" wheel put back on. It's by Touratech, is well made, fits proper, and does the job. Without the mudguard you hit a puddle, the water rises in front of you... looks great, then you run into it!

All the decals available from BMW dealer... mine are from an earlier model.

Hope this helps mate, ride safe, between the hedges, and rubber side down :thumb

Ps It pays to fit new rubber cush drive thingies each time you fit new chain and sprockets.

Good thread gentlemen, its nice to see some activity on the 650 section. :thumb
I’m with Micky on the cush drives, I fitted a new chain and sprocket set at 10K and left the old set in for 50 miles then changed over to the new ones, a marked improvement.

Gratuitous photo !

fffffantastic piccie GC :clap

Your home ground? Where? Wanna go!

Should've been in Scotland right now but heavy snow and ice here

The 'big boys' can talk all they want about the merrits of 1100's, 1150's, 1200's, what's THE colour to be seen with, THE jacket not to wear etc. Just whimsical hyperstutter...

Never hurry... never worry... take time to smell the flowers :)

Very interested in your comments on the 19/21 front wheel as I've never had confidence in my 21 on tarmac.Much better with Anakees than the Sahara 3s however.Guess I'll be looking for a secondhand wheel! :thumb
Cheers,
Tony

Hi Tony... I spent ages looking for a 19" wheel S/H ... none about. The F650 Funduro will fit, narrower rim but same tyre size, wants a spacer because of the speedo drive though. Ended up buying new F650GS wheel and don't regret it. Best of both worlds... The 'bike's just about SupaMoto now :D

Thread Hi Jack... ha! No probs GC. I quite often like to throw a pebble into the pond and watch the ripples... or was that go out with a blond and play with the nipples, dunno, can't remember

Lovely area... will be there... thanks :thumb

Can I ask, how much did a new 650GS front wheel cost? I've been looking for a S/H one but no joy and I really want one! Been looking at the Wunderlich 17" but £468.16 is a bit more than I want to spend.

Hi. I bought one new from the dealer, with a bit of discount it came to £380 ... a lot of money but well worth it. The bike's gonna be around for a long while, and the difference in handling made it well worth while. I've tried all the different tyres at various times, but Metzeler Tourance are the best by far, well for me they are!

If you were to fit the Wunderlich 17" you'd also be fitting a much wider tyre a 120 I think, and wouldn't be a good match for the standard 130 rear.

Other mods are...

Wilbers rear suspension and front fork springs/oil.
Remus exhaust. Sounds a bit 'Pop pop poppety' though, but still better than a sewing machine sound. Much lighter and engine revs freer.
Touratech blades for extra protection on the handguards.
Touratch extended sump guard and center stand guard.
Filler cap with oil temperature guage.
Touratech front mudguard. (better fit & appearance than Wunderlich)
Wunderlich extra crash side bars. (as per the photo)
BMW Engine bars now re-fitted. (not shown on piccie)
Wunderlich 'Blue' air filter. (akin to K & N)
Touratch matching fog and Xenon lights (taken from my 1150 Adventure when it went) I wouldn't be without these, standard headlight crap!
Wunderlich seat.
BMW Motorrad Navigator II GPS.
On board camera mounts for bullet cam.
Rear mudguard replaced under warranty (fell to pieces on the rough roads through Russia) but cut down before fitting! No rear blade so to speak, the nearside arm being cut down just to cover the rear caliper and speedo sensor etc. leaving just the chainguard on the offside.

I lied about the mileage, it's now done 37,500 miles and it'll be two years old in April :thumb

I love my 'bike :inlove

Hope the above of help :beerjug:
