I work with win98se, on a built in graphics card. Lately I have tried to view the pictures that you guys are posting, as well as on other sites, and the pictures are exceptionally dark. e.g. I cannot make out the picture on Bawdymonks, BHT, and others, avatars anymore (not a bad thing you might say, but...)
Even the pics that I loaded last Saturday of me pride and joy, on the pc look extremely dark.
Any suggestions?

Let the light shine in.

Apart from the obvious quips like "remove your sunglasses" and "turn up the brightness", a couple of things..It's more likely to be your monitor than the fact you're using windows 98 or a built in graphics card.

1. Does it affect 'normal viewing' i.e for day to day surfing, is it noticeable all the time or just when you look at dark pictures?

2. Does it matter how you adjust the contrast/brightness? Some monitors have an on-screen menu which may contain items to select colour and warmth etc. Might be worth playing around with the settings if available.

3. Do you have another PC and or monitor you can swap round to go through a process of elimination to confirm the culprit?

Some old monitors do darken with age, especially if they've been left switched on for long periods...maybe the only solution would be to go for another monitor. If you don't have another to check, I'm sure some of the helpful lads on the forum would be able to come round with theirs and check for you:D

Good luck../Rob

treat yourself to a new monitor

if you have the space, a 19" or 17" CRT are great value, £70-100 New

TFT are super slim, but thet cost more £199-£399.

Bigger the screen and a hih res will make things better, but saying that, got a 15" Laptop with 1200x1600, took me weeks to adjust to the small but very sharp letttering.

Gary.
