My Apple Macbook hard drive has packed in, sent it back and they are fixing it, unfortunately they can't recover the data because "they can't get it to mount on their bus" asked for this in laymans terms and they said they couldn't connect to it?????

Does anyone have any experience of trying to get the data of a hard drive in this condition? I done a quick search on google for data recovery but thought I would ask here before jumping in!

I am getting the hard drive back from Apple at a cost of £105.00 + VAT.

Foolishly I didn't have any data back upped! :(:(

I used a company called Vogon about 8 years ago to recover a microdrive which they did successfully. Was quite expensive though, I think it was about £500 then. Might have been based on the number of MB to recover.

Searching the web suggests they are now called http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.co.uk/

Regards,
Richard

I had a chat with these people and it looks as if it will be somewhere around £500 to recover the data!!

We owned a data recovery company but split from them a few years ago :blast Best tip I ever heard of and have used is bung the drive in a sealed plastic bag and wrapped in paper and put it in the deep freeze for 8 hours, then back in the machine whilst it is still cold - I have no idea why this works but it has for me on the one occasion I tried it.

Freezer worked for me when hdd bearings went tits up, I was able to recover files piecemeal by freezing / running several times. Only needed 15 minutes a shot in the freezer.

It sounds like the same trick to override the security code on car-radios. There's probably a button-battery or capacitor that stores bios settings or something. If they get corrupted the battery needs to be temporally depleted - freezing it does this - in order to clear the memory. Putting it back cold ensures the memory is booted up from clear and the hard drive can be accessed again.

Just a guess.

This sounds suspiciously like an excuse for not being able to submit work to your tutor ... :fiddle
Have a chat with Chris Brockley in AGE - he is a Mac king ...
I have three back-ups running constantly. Not that I'm neurotic ... :augie

Haven't you got work to do???

Suffice to say I won't be seeing you tomorrow night !:D

Do you use an online backup or home based?

Yes ... I'm working today as well:whip
I've got two drives in demountable carriers - the software backs up to them as I work and I rotate them monthly. Lost a month's work a couple of years ago.
And an external Iomega drive.
I'll burn to CD/DVD monthly as well.
No I'm not neurotic .. just paranoid ...
