Any recommendations for database software? Something like Microsoft Access but easier to use and preferably freeware.

It's for work and needs to sort and arrange around 6000 addresses of suppliers, clients and the like, and be exportable to word and excel. Some marketing functions would be good as well. I'm having a look around myself, but as usual I'll ask for the Wisdom of the Collective as nothing beats real-world experiences.

TIA

Sounds like you want contact management or possibly CRM (customer realtionship management) software rather than a database. I suspect you'll find more the right sort of thing searching with those words? Something like this
I used ACT and GOLDmine, but over 10 years ago. they were a bit sales focused as I think most Contact management sw is.

If its just a replacement for access thats free :thumb2 then try open office a full microsoft office replacement thats free there version of access is called base. Might be what your looking for.

http://openoffice.3-suite.com/

+1 on that

And I can tell you that what it outputs is compatible with ..er.. whoever you might be doing your direct mailing through :augie

Actually, we use OpenOffice at work anyway. One of my few remaining workers is hopefully figuring out how to work the database bit as we speak.

And it works with direct mail machines? Even better! :thumb
