I have put in a bit of fairly simple work on my 11GS and it’s finally leaving Skippy land (kangaroo!)
This 11GS (3rd) has always been a bit of a PIA in town on/off throttle and even though you can ride around it OK it is better if it’s tuned out as much as poss, just out of trying to get it as good as possible
Recently it has played up a bit with tickover/balance so I thought fck it, lets get serious! Stuff done:
- The valve clearances and end floats were checked recently.
- Next I attacked the injectors. I took ‘em off and gave ‘em a thorough clean. Now they looked a bit messy with carbon/fuel residue but not too much. I removed the butterfly disc (MARK IT 1st so it goes back the same way!) and cleaned it inc the edges. I cleaned the venturi, the butterfly/spring mechanism, and especially the tickover air bleed passage and brass adjuster which are bad for carboning up.
- DON’T fck with the preset screws for the butterfly stops and carefully reassemble. I cleaned the inlet and airbox manifold to TB joints as they were cruddy. I made sure all the throttle cable seat/adjusters were clean and free moving and lubed the crossover cable.
- Then i reassembled it all and checked the TPS voltage and set it to .38. I left the cable adjusters loose and set the tickover balance with the brass air bypass screws (with Morgan Carbtune). I then set the cables to balance the TB’s at higher revs.
- When i went out for a ride it was still a bit of a kangaroo at slow speeds and when I did some basic checks the TPS voltage had gone down to .34 (might have banged it??) so shows how important getting this right is. I reset it again at .38 and rechecked the balance. After a couple of rides I rechecked the balance and did some minor adjustments for the off idle balance. I also fitted some Autolites as they were recommended and cheap.
It took me alltogether about 4 hours. It cost me a set of eBay Autolites! It is much smoother and better at low revs with nearly all the slow speed problems sorted. Thank fck for that!
Moral.... simple systematic setting up and hey presto. I think that’s what Steptoe always means
. Any other similar cases then it’s worth giving it a go
