dead aux socket x 2

Any suggestions welcome - the RID is fine and the aux are on the same fuse I think so that must be ok. I can understand 1 but both?

I flippin hate electrics - I'm leaving on a big trip next weekend too. Should have checked this earlier I guess - they used to be OK!

I would really appreciate it if someone could point me at a circuit diagram for the aux connectors on the 1150 cos I've searched around and can't find one. Only 1100GS or 1150GS without aux as far as I can see

The upper aux socket is daisy chained off the lower aux socket.

Take the plastic cover off the starter motor, and have a look at the connectors. It might be full of corrosion, or just stuffed.

If that fails, just run a decent bit of coax cable through a fuse suitable for what you are going to need and make new connections directly to the battery to get you over your trip, then you can piddle about with the problem afterwards

I think Ian has it nailed though.......use a DMM to test the connections from point to point and you should be able to pin down where the circuit is broken.

I thought they might be daisy chained but in my stupid head I thought they would then only work if both connected! I'll take the starter cover off and see what gives there.

Else - yep, I've got a spare Gerbing heated gloves harness with an inline fuse that I can easily run up to the connector.

Broken Wire

Had the same problem a while back. Turned out to be a broken/corroded wire just where it leaves the 2-pin plug on the back of the aux socket.
It wasn't immediately obvious - had to pull wire slightly as it was still sitting in position in back of plug.
If this is the problem its easily fixed as BMW sell a repair kit - a plug with 2 tails & crimps.

+1 for corrosion. I looked over both of mine only last weekend to check they were working and they were rather err...green inside!

Corrosion it was. Pulled the connectors and one just came out the connector - corroded right through. Still wasn't getting 12v from the wires either though (sometimes I could, then it would just stop - the worst kind of problem...) and I've not got time to dig any deeper before leaving next weekend so I put a quick new circuit to the socket.

I had a socket fail. The earth connection is brass terminal to aluminium body - bad design, aluminium oxidises, no contact. Check each terminal and inside the socket with a voltmeter or (better) a test lamp which will draw a bit of current.
