Well after many shut downs and screen telling me a disc has failed which usually worked ok after switching of and on again it has given up the ghost. Only four years old anyone repaired these things?,
changing a drive?. Any piss taking or even advice gratefully received.

Should be easy enough with a set of precision screwdrivers, chuck an SSD in there which are faster and more reliable.

You can search google or the hp site for a repair manual for your model, though i normally just get stuck in and see what happens :D

Is it a laptop or a PC

A PC good thinking never thought of Google, worked fro other manuals so sound like a good start!!, It's neazrly gone through the window a few times!!, still a good poke around nothing to loose, many thanks for help offered.

Three cheers for Google, got the official HP manual for doing same looks a piece of cake (famous last words! ) so got to track down a hard drive and see how we go, many thanks to all.

Changing the drive is dead easy but you will need to reinstall windows and your hardware drivers, you may be able to get some of your personal data off the old drive but the PC will be like a new one and will need to be reconfigured to your taste.

Thanks Steve, that wont be a prob as I was not 100% happy with windows 8.1 any way but have all the original discs so thinking about windows 10,
I'll take the easy route and stick with what I got!. HP site is very good sounds like even ancient tossers can manage it!, apparently the connections for their(HP) drives are STA, I see these drives are marked as SATA 2 or 3, are the connections different?. any advice appreciated, guess I'm turning into a computer nurd as well as a bike nurd!!.

Had a look around and all I find are SSD hybrids, are these any good or best to look for all solid state?.

Ok some things you'll need to check before you start.

Hopefully your mother board and power supply are not ancient.
If they are you'll have to replace like for like .

Do this bit first before anything else.
You need to know what HDD you have.
Get the hard drive out and have a look at it, It'll either be an IDE HDD or a SATA HDD.

As your a beginner you could keep it simple and replace like for like,
or if your motherboard is fairly recent and you can install a SATA SSD you'll notice a much faster machine going from a disk drive to a solid state drive.

Free upgrade to Windows 10 has ended

The free upgrade to Windows 10 ended in July.

Maybe worth biting the bullet and getting a new PC/Laptop with Windows 10 already installed.

Windows 10 is still available free here. <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade" target="_blank">Linky</a>

I think we all need assistive technology sometimes.

Many thanks lads,, I shall be having a go I thought the hard drive first then take it from there, at present I'm using SWMBI's computer which has windows 7 which is a bit slower but better than 8!. Keeps telling me "we don't need two computers" but like bikes they don't understand!!, I'm amazed at the capacity of drives available and cant help thinking building your own machine might be a good idea (not for me!!). This is only about 4 years old so I thing resurection is a good idea.
