Further to the above 'strange' change in the way my computer's working. I now find when I save a picture from the net, (using right click/save picture as) Windows only offers me the option to save as bitmap file, whereas previously, I'm sure they were all jpegs?

Any clues?

any clues?

SP2?

Could be an "enhacement" to prevent downloading executables masquerading as jpg's.

If you are now on SP2, check the new Security Centre" thingy.

I'll be more knowledgable come Monday when my new PC arrives and I move to XP and no doubt experience all these joys

Solution

Mostly people see this when their cache is full. The easiest way to fix this is to clear your cache. Another symptom of this is nothing happens when you View->Source on a web page.

Actually this may not be the whole answer. Lot's of us see the "can only save as *.bmp" annoyance start when there is plenty of room left in the IE cache. But the default cache size that IE sets is a fixed percentage of your total hard disk size. Once hard disk sizes got really big (more than 100 Gb say), the cache size when only partially full gets simply too ginormously full of stuff for IE to find the actual cached image it wants in a reasonable time....... so it cops out and offers to save it from the physical RAM or stuff recently paged by the XP OS from RAM to virtual memory on disk ...which of cause is raw pixels that can only be easily transcribed as a *.bmp file.

So :-

A.) Clear your IE cache; solves the problem for now.

B.) Long term...use the TweakUI utility to set IE to default to flushing its cache during each close down.

Delete your tempary internet files.
go to...

Tools >> Internet Options >> Tempary Internet Files >> Delete Files

That should fix it...
