Trying to defrag my "C" drive (got two hard drives, C & D, plus cd-rom & floppy)

Turned off screensaver & task scheduler, disabled firewall & anti-virus & ensured broadband connection stopped.

Everytime it gets to 10% it says "drive data changed" and starts again.

Thought it might be me, so tried to de-frag'd the "D" drive - did so with no problems.

What haven't I turned off/disabled on "C" that needs doing?

Ta!

Wot Operating System Mate?
"Win98 ver 1 notoriously bad at hanging while Defraging"
I'll give you one guess, and one guess only........................:(

Thing is, it's never done it before when defragging, so I think/thought I'd left something enabled.

might be because 'defragging' means pulling linked parcels of data together - if a parcel is strapped across 2 physical drives it might get confused.
So how would I get round that?

Iain said; Microsoft Findfast?
D'you mean use the dreaded help function to find out what the problem might be? shudder.............

Nah... Find Fast... the Office indexer thing that runs every few minutes and scrotes about on your drives to index where recently opened documents are, if this is kicking in it will interupt your defrag.... if you've ever opened a document directly form a floppy :nono you will hear it spinning up the empty floppy days later trying to find the document.

starting pc in "safe mode" before defrag should sort it.

safe mode is entered by pressing F8 during boot on most PC BIOS's.

ps. most ppl would be better off removing find fast from the start menu so it never loads.
