Why is it that some bike dealers charge for test rides (OK I know it's for insurance, but it's still a charge), whereas I can go to a car dealership and take out a car, that is worth twice that of a bike, unaccompanied, for a test drive no problem, no charge :nenau

Not having a go at you or Williams, Kirk, as I know there are a good few dealers out there that do this, not just BMW ones, but there are a few differences. For example, the last time I enquired at Allan Jefferies you had to sign for up to £1000 insurance excess or for a tenner you could waive this. At Southport Superbikes there is no charge I'm aware of, I'm not sure if there is an insurance excess. I could take the new VFR1200 for a test ride today from my local Honda dealership for no charge but would have to sign for up to £1000 excess.
I don't remember having to sign for excesses on any car I've taken for a test drive in recent years which include several different Audi and VW garages and Honda :nenau

Further, I have BMW insurance and, if I remember correctly, it covers me to ride any bike loaned to me by a BMW dealer. Would I still be charged £10 for the insurance?

Phil Youles motorcycles (Triumph dealer) in Blackburn will only let you have a demo ride if you leave an £800 deposit on your credit card. They say it's to discourage the knobs who turn up and thrash the arse off the bikes, doing donuts, wheelies etc; they told me they've had too many bikes damaged on demo rides prior to this deposit.

ok....just to clarify..
the charge of £10 is for the insurance yes, but the excess is only £250 where as it was actually £1000 last year, so surely £10 that gives you full comprehensive cover and legal cover is worth it
plus you refer to test driving a new car for no charge, this may be true but i bet they dont let you take the car out for the entire day if you were seriously looking to buy that vehicle.
the fact remains we have a customer of williams that paid £10 for his insurance, took out our new R1200GS and snapped it in two pieces, badly injuring himself, broken pelvis, hip, leg and arm.
His £10 made sure we paid for his legal fees, medical bills / expenses, loss of earnings........etc etc etc..

so is it worth the £10 fee we charge ? i let you decide :thumb2

£10 for an all day test ride is a lot better than the £25 that the local Kawasaki dealer wanted to charge for a 30 minute test ride on a GTR1400. They said they would refund it if I bought one!

Actually, where I bought my Audi from I could have had it all day, I returned it after about 4 hours though as I'd seen as much as I needed to.

If I was unfortunate enough for this to happen to me then my own insurance would cover me for this anyway, as I said BMW insurance supposedly covers the insured to ride any bike loaned to them by an authorised BMW dealer.

As I mentioned, Kirk, I wasn't having a go at you or at Williams, I know there are plenty out there that charge more and some that won't even allow test rides (how they sell bikes is beond me). However, Southport Superbikes don't charge (or didn't last time I took a bike out), the only requirement was to leave my licence with them whilst I was out on the bike and, as long as the bike isn't required for someone else, I could have had it all day.

thats a fair point Bob, what i would suggest is maybe look at what the excess is, where we charge £10 to minimise the excess to £250, most dealers that don't charge a fee have their excess set at £1000 +

just worth checking before you ride.
anyways......im off out on the K1300GT now, see what this baby's got, lol:thumb2
