Desk top shortcuts V slow to open

Help Folks my PC while getting on a bit now ( 1200 prcessor 80 gig HD 512 meg of ram running XP s2 etc)
normaly works fine but latlely I have been having a problem. when I double click on a sortcut on the desk top to open a programe it takes forever to open typicaly 1 minute BUT sometimes it seems ok and only takes 10- 20 seconds. I have run spybot, ad aware, Norton anti virus But still the problem persists .
It doesn't seem any different if I go directly to programes and try and open the programe from there.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated as other than this problem the PC is adequat for my needs i.e. surfing the net , email writing the odd letter and digitla still photography.

Make sure you are not connected to the internet then turn the Anti Virus On-Access scanner off, do things improve? Restart still with the AV off, any better now?

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply Daz
I ran "Ad Aware" again and it picked up a Virus / corruption / whatever re double clicking I removed this and all is fine again

Norton

Hi Mike..

I bet Norton is causing the problem as well. Try closng Norton down completly and run the comp. It speeds up no end.

One of the options is to scan all .exe files before running. I got rid of Norton, after having it for years and thinking it was the bees. (it was once)

Now I use AVG Free edition. much better.
