If I want to try and tidy up my PC's desktop, how do I tell what icons I can delete (ie just shortcuts) as opposed from the files I have stored there,

I have a number of fonts (30) stored on the desktop. Are they just there or are they automatically stored in the font list as well? The fonts I have used are in the font list file but others on the the desktop are missing

Numpty question I know and i'm not even sure I've explained it very well but help/clarification would be appreciated.

Oh & feel free to take the piss if it's a real stupid question:thumb2

You can configure XP to put a little white square with an arrow on links, to make it more obvious. It is generally already there on many machines, but if it's not set on yours, download TweakUI from Microsoft and that will allow you to enable it.

Also, if you right-click on an icon and it's a link, the properties window will be for "Shortcut" and there will be information on the "Target" which is what the icon links to.

Fonts that are in use should be in the c:\Windows\Fonts folder - the fonts on your desktop will probably be files that Windows used for the install. Create a folder called "Fonts" and copy them all into it.

You can browse to your desktop by the way - it's under c:\Documents and Settings\your_user_name\Desktop

An even quicker and lazy way is just create a new folders and move the icons into them.
You could have one folder for photo's, any utilitys you have or for various others. You then only have to open the folder and select the shortcut you need.
And just leave on the desktop the ones you constantly use.
