devils elbow

good link :thumb2 Reminds me of when I wiz a boy. Sittin in the back of my Dad's car on a Sunday trip up "the Glen" and him negotiating the Devil's Elbow brings back fond memories.

The only road that I can think of that might come close is coming out of Porlock in Somerset going up to I think Dunkery Becon in me dads Austin A40.

By the way I was speaking to 'Rab' who works at Newton Castle he remembers you and your Dad along Tommy Sutherlands Dad:eek:

Rum Buggers i think he said:confused::confused::confused:

Any idea of his surname?

Sorry about the delay bit late to make phone calls last night.

Surname is Kettles.

Thanks.

I'm still none the wiser although it rings a vague bell in my memory. I'll probably wake up in the middle of the night with a big light bulb over my heid :thumb2

Devils Elbow

I paused on the A93 today, but couldn't figure out exactly where the Devils Elbow is/was. Any clues on how to get to the bends shown in the photos?

Go about two thirds up the 'hill' towards the col at Glenshee, there is a break in the 'Armco' barrier - on the right, of course.

You can ride one of the bends.

Check the OS map sheet 43 at Grid Refernce: 143763

Have fun:thumbtowr

There is also an a gap before that which enables you to drive part of the old road and then up what is left of the road to the above break in the 'Armco' barrier. where the 'Armco' is, is where the devils elbow would have been.:thumb2

Devil's Elbow - I'm happy now

Having found the original hairpin in March - at least the remaining lower or first hairpin - I managed to park my bike on it last Saturday as the snow had shifted.

Must have been scary driving up there in the old days.

A bus from Edinburgh with load of Chinese tourists on a Teuchter day trip pulled in for 10 minutes and a young Chinese lass asked if her pal could take her photo of her standing beside me and the bike. I laughed and almost choked on my sannie.

Ronno

As you go up the new road towards Glenshee you will have a parking area on your right which is clearly visable from the road about another 150/200 metres on from that you will have another gap in the cheese wire safety fence which drops down onto the old road.

Go left at the bottom of this and you will find what is left of the old road. You can if you wish and with care then ride some of the road back up onto the new road word of warning though when you reach the top you come up onto the grass verge with maybe a metre or two to spare before you are on the road. If there is a car coming down from Glenshee you will scare the shit out them!?!?!?!?!

Cheers.

wot he said!!

I did exactly that and popped up onto the new road. Luckily it was very quiet as I hung a right up the hill.

There is a fair stretch of the old road down there. It's pretty much invisible from the new road.

It's approximately here N56 52.396 W3 24.469
