Does anyone here have any knowledge of Devil's Staircase (Which is SE of Strata Florida) grid ref no 831/558 .From what I can gather there are approx 3 fords and about 100m climb from/decent to( depending on direction) at approx 20% (1 in 5).
Questions I need answers to, are ;
What type of surface is there ( mud/gravel/rocks/boulders)?
Is this easy-intermediate-hard.?
oh and is it GSable?
All info gratefully recieved; Thanks in advance to all replies.

PM Bob Jefferies on this site and he will give ewe all the info ewe need. I have been there and done that but on a DRZ and it was three years since. Far too many beers have come and gone since then, Bob will know though:thumb2

Rode to today!

Its a very steep hill between Abergwesgyn & Tregaron/Llyne Brianne. Just come in from riding it this afternoon! The council have just resurfaced it this afternoon with bitumen and chippings. Though steep you can take the family car up/down it. The rivers youve seen on what I guess is you map are below the staircase - bridges. If your into off-roading you will be approx 2 miles from the end of Strata Florida - a great ride with plenty of river crossings. Have a good ride!

Thanks steve g. but I obviously got that wrong :augie I'm looking for more off road in the area did strata florida in april and loved it, will be going back for a weekend in september for another go:cool: I was just looking for possible add ons (I know Monks Trod is closed until end of november):spitfire . Thanks for the info.:thumb

I was there at the weekend helping with a British Championship Enduro.

Devil's Staircase is the name of a section of road in the middle of the Abergwesyn to Tregaron mountain road. The Abergwesyn to Tregaron road is a single track tarmac road with passing places and fantastic scenery.

The Devil's Staircase bit is a steep up and down with a nasty hairpin on the Abergwesyn side but is actually used by forestry articulated logging trucks (hence the need for the recent resurfacing) and is a nice ride/drive with no difficulties.

We run the Cambrian Rally in this area and have had one of the special stages in the Esgair Cloddiad forest block at the top of Devil's Staircase, Casey Thomas did a frightening on board video of one of his runs through it on his GS

Heading north off the Abergwesyn to Tregaron road just after the Tregaron side of Devil's Staircase (SN 80477 56908) is the Strata Florida right of way. The first mile or two of Strata Florida is easily GS'able on tourances (but easier on TKC 80's) and we did it in a Vauxhall Frontera 4x4 on Saturday to rescue a broken down bike in the event - I then towed him back to the start at Pontrhydfendigaid. After that there are a series of fords, some of which can be very deep (the second one as you head North is usually the worst). In a dry summer they are OK and I have ridden Strata Florida both ways on a GS but in winter or our current summer I would want a gang of helpers with me "just in case".

If you ride East to West you can always turn South at Tregaron on the B4343 and visit Llanddewi Brefi, you never know who you might meet there :ymca

Reply to Robbie C's thread hi-jack

Rob

Been waiting to find a way to contact you, I had forgotten your site name and couldn't find the original thread.

Thank you very, very much for your very generous gifts, they did all fit and it did the trick as Jill has now been my pillion on a 6 day trip around the North of Ireland and for a great weekend at the Hograost, including a great "Ford" trip led by Farnum. We're planning our next trip at the moment and already have a week in France pencilled in for next May.

She has since bought a new pair of trousers as she prefers "Textile" to leather and she doesn't think she'll use the shorter jacket. If you want to have those back please just ask, it'll give me an excuse to meet you out at Abergavenny so I can thank you in person again. Otherwise I'll put them up for sale on here and you can have the cash.

I'll ask one of our club (WTRA) guys about leading a pogo ride, he has acted as a "professional" i.e. paid for, guide in the past. I haven't done much "trail riding" for a few years as I do most of my pogo riding in the forests finding and setting up enduro courses - I'll be doing it again this weekend ready for a British Championship Enduro that I'm helping run on the 11th & 12th August based in Llandovery.

Many thanks Rob

Regards
Bob Jeffries

you can sell the jacket and give the money to that charity thingy that you're involved in

glad to hear the wifes back onboard

if you want to meet up give me a call, I'll be up for a quick spin :thumb :thumb :thumb :thumb
