Did you get your spare key in the post? Were you worried?

I picked up my new GS12 in May, my first BMW and first brand new bike. I was told to expect the spare key in the post. Now thats fine, I assumed it would arrive recorded delivery over the next couple of weeks.

After over a month went by with no key I phoned the dealer and asked where it was. They told me it had been sent but as it was just in the normal post they had no way of finding out where it was. I was a bit worried about this as there is a clear security risk there. They ordered another key and I asked them to keep it at the dealers and I would pick it up in person. Naturally they sent it out in the post again, but it did arrive. However it had my next door neighbours address on it, had BMW plastered all over it and even though it came in a jiffy bag, you could feel it was a key.

I went fuming down to the dealership with my concerns. They said a key had only been lost once before, thats how all keys are sent and no-one has complained before. (oh well, that makes it alright I guess(!)):eek

I said that whilst no-one had complained, I bet a lot of people were surprised to recieve a key for their new bike through normal post, clearly labled BMW. As they had the key though, they would just shake their heads and forget about it. Am I right? Or do you think it's an acceptable policy? I thought I'd run a quick poll to find out.

(BTW i checked my neighbours didn't have the first key - the house was empty for a month the time it was sent but the new neighbours said their was nothing when they moved in)

Were you OK with that or did you think it was a little insecure? I take it it was unregistered mail?

Not registered mail and I did think it was a bit insecure. However, the dealer did not tell me that they had already sent it, so I was not concerned that one had been lost. It could be better if the key was wrapped up so it was not obvious what's in the envelope. And I didn't get another key fob, tight bu*gers
