Hi Folks,

Does anyone know exactly all the differences between the 1150 GS and GSA, and what it would take to convert one to other?

As a bit of background, I'm currently thinking of replacing both shocks on my GS, which to my newbie way of thinking would seem to be the most expensive difference?

As I quite fancy a GSA, but also have just got my GS the way I like it and can't be arsed buying and selling...... is converting one a practical proposition?

Thx

The GSA tank is bigger, I would think a replacement quite expensive, selling your original tank would offset some of the cost. The GSA also has different gearing, how far down the line do you want to go?
The only benefit the GSA has over the standard one is the size of the tank, and a bit more suspension travel, if you are going to use the bike mainly for tarmac is there much point in changing and the extra expense?

GS GSA

well, it will cost a few bob..

screen and fittings
beak extender
braided hoses
centre stand
side stand
petrol tank
suspension
anodised wheel rims
seat
rear carrier
grab handle
locking mechanism
gearing
crash bars
bash plate

probably a few other bits n bobs... good luck. ;)

no doubt all available secondhand if you are not in a rush:thumb2

I think thats the key... I'm not in a rush. The only reason I'm thinking about it is the current chance to replace suspension (which needs doing anyway) with wilburs kit.

Would I be right in assuming the centre/side stand as listed above needs to be replaced because of the new height? Or is there some other difference?

The big tank/suspension/engine bars/bash plate appeals to me as worth doing. (would like to do some off road touring)

Already have aftermarket big screen fitted, Sargent seat, givi topbox, etc, so not too worried about doing the seat/rail stuff, but could always pick one up 2nd hand at some point.

would make much more economic sense to sell your GS and just buy a GSA!

been a few on ebay going quite cheap recently

Dunno, most of what I've seen on ebay is still asking silly money, ie 5500 ish, and lingering on there for weeks/months as a result.

As I've got to do the suspension anyway....... the rest doesn't look that expensive from what I've seen so far of prices round here..... :D (top site this)

been a few under £5k:eek:

anyway... good luck buying stuff in the for sale & wants section..

you will have to be faster than a fast thing tied up in fast string to bag anything on there:thumb

If you are putting GSA shocks onto a GS you risk damage as I think there is some issue with the drive shaft not being long enough... I'm sure someone will be along to tell you more.

As others have said it would work out more economical to sell yours and buy a GSA. The difference between the 2 is only a few hundred quid... but a lot more in time and money if you go down the conversion route IMO.

There was a similar thread here recently.

From that, it appears that the GSA swing arm is longer than that of the GS.

If you just fit a longer shock you run the risk of knackering the drive shaft (which was the subject of yet another recent thread).

I would go with the flow and recommend selling the standard GS and buying a standard GSA.

a 'messed around' bike is always going to be viewed with suspicion when you come to sell it.

Bob.

Yeah, if the arm is longer, thats an issue. May just keep the original specs.

Does anyone have a link to more info?

The swingarm is the same length. And so is the driveshaft, despite it having a different part number. I know because i had to buy and fit a brand new driveshaft this weekend for a customer.

Lots of people have changed shocks on an ADV to a standard GS and vice versa without any problems.

You live and learn :bow

Just an addition to the list: QR fittings on the fuel lines (although that is arguably part of the tank to save a number of replies!)

Also need thicker soled boots to reach the ground again...

They were standard fitting on all GS's from around 2002.

There really is very little difference between the ADV and standard GS.
Basically the ADV is higher, and has a different seat and screen, and the wheels are a different colour. Nothing that you can't bolt on and change yourself.
