Differences - extended vs dealer used warranty

Appreciate this may have been asked before many times but my GSA manufacturer warranty runs out in August 2018 but purchased the bike from a dealer so has 'used approved warranty' until December 2019.

The dealer advised me to get it back into them in July so they can fix any 'issues' before main warranty runs out and advised purchasing the extended warranty when offered from BMW after August '18. Bit confusing as thought it was all covered until Dec 2019 but apparently there are more exclusions on the dealer warranty but they weren't able to tell me clearly for some reason (asked me to go back to the salesman!). Also, I assume that I won't have the option to buy the BMW manufacturer extended warranty when the dealer used warranty expires in Dec 2019?

Anyone know the differences / have any experiences to share...

I would suggest you get the selling dealer to knock the cost of a BMW Extended Warranty off the cost off the bike

My son had a K1600GT with a dealer approved (at the time 12 months warranty from a BMW dealer(Vines)) now they always offer 24 months and there was no noticeable difference between a new warranty and the approved used. But check the approved used document that you should have been supplied.
 
This is something I spoke to my dealer about last week. My bike is an ex-demo model and was six months old when I bought it. The dealer paid for the approved used warranty, which gives me 2 years from the date I purchased the bike.

I asked the dealer what warranty the bike is under and they explained that the standard manufacturers warranty will take me up to 18 months of ownership (the bike will be 2 years old) and for the remaining 6 months the bike comes under the approved used warranty (AUW)

As I’d already read the AUW I noticed that in the list of things it covers, nowhere does it mention the suspension, which had me worried, hence asking the dealer. The dealer said the AUW is the same as the manufacturers warranty and covers the electrical side of the suspension for the life of the warranty and the hydraulic side up to 30,000 miles. This is the same as what other people on this forum have experienced.

From a detailed perspective, I think it could be argued that the suspension is not covered at all in the AUW, but I guess that depends on the willingness of the dealer and BMW to address any issues.

I enquired about the cost, I think they said £14 a month or something. Having worked in the motor trade I am aware that these AUW and any other after sales warranties are just insurance policies, which makes me think I might look at regular after sales warranties when the time comes as it may be cheaper and more comprehensive.

BMW extended warranty is worth the cost if your bike needs new front and rear shocks and a handlebar switch unit at 35 months old (it will save you over £3000 after the cost of the warranty is factored in)
 
I bought a bike from a dealer and I am sure the BMW AUB Warranty covers more than the Insured Warranty. The Insured Warranty is pretty good although there are some key exclusions, but it does cover wear and tear items which are only relevant for older bikes. I don't see any reason for you to buy the Insured Warranty until you AUB runs out.

This is correct. The insured warranty is actually extremely picky on what it covers whereas the AUB is a lot comprehensive.

Thanks for the replies and very helpful info. Does anyone know if I have the option of extending the warranty after the dealer warranty runs out (i.e Dec 2019 when the bike will be over 3 years old)? I was under the impression that there is a window after the '2 years from new' period that you can extend otherwise it cannot be renewed.

At the end of the AUB period you can extend it every year. I think they will allow a new warranty up to when the bike has done 80,000 miles, after that you can get Emergency Cover/Roadside Assistance but no more warranty :(

The AUW doesn’t mention suspension at all. But the dealer said it did. One contradicts the other.

A riding mate has just blown his 2013 engine , cam chain broke , now he has the extended warrentee (around £35 a month) , now the dealer said that now BMW does not provide full / half engines only cases , so this means the whole engine will now be stripped , assessed and costed and rebuilt.
If the value of the repair is deemed to much he will get the agreed second hand value.
His disappointment is that he was offered a replacement engine last year if he paid the fitting for the unit as his engine was showing bad corrosion but due to commitments could not do this. Now he will have a possible rebuilt engine with new and corroded parts mixed , so no good really.
Shame as he did ask that the engine was making a rattling noise last service , now 2300 miles later boooom.
So is it worth it , well yes as he could have got nothing , a big bill and a long wait. Its a pity that the finshed bike will be repaired but not as you would really like it to be.
 
I suggest he gets another dealer. The warranty covers whatever it needs to, there are no exclusions about not supplying whole engines/gearboxes. Normally, if the cost of repair is more than the price of the bike, the customer has the option to pay the additional amount to get the bike repaired.

That's the information given to the dealer from the warrentee company and BMW and there are exclusions in the policy , he is still however waiting a final solution. I would imagine that all dealers would be bound by the same restrictions and given the same answers when it comes to an insured warrentee , normally there are no grey areas with insurance companies as they are clever.
