After much deliberation, I have decided to give the Blackbird a miss and today put a deposit down on a brand new GS (Graphitan, ABS, heated grips and panniers). Picking it up in approx 4 weeks - can't wait!
I spent a long time reading all the magazine tests and chatting with a mate that has had a couple of them since 94 – 1100 then 1150.
I like the styling and had the original beaky, DR800SL, back in '91.
All it required was to find one that I could afford! Not all of us can afford to run loads of recent model bikes in this price range.
In the end I traded my 2001 Bandit 1200 for it. The Bandit was very smooth, had plenty of oomph but was honestly quite soulless. It achieved semi-warp speeds two up with luggage and returned 35 to each and every gallon at three figure speeds. The fairing was more efficient than the GS’s. But…..
The GS is far better built, has minimal depreciation compared to Japanese bikes and is quite a bit cheaper to insure, at my advanced age, than the Bandit.
When I got it the guy at SPC said I would have to get used to it; that I may hate it for a few weeks. Wrong. I loved the 120-mile ride home and have not regretted making the switch.
