Hi all

I use a Canon EOS10QD SLR at the moment and fancy going digital with the canon ESO350D digital or similar (just cause my lenses should fit, i hope!)

Have any of our happy snappers got an opinion on the digital SLR?

As you already have some canon fit lenses nikon is out of the question I guess, so the two models you want to have a look at are the Canon 350D and the Canon 20D which is the more grown up brother to it. Those bodies can be had for around 500 and 800 respectively .

My pics in this thread:

were taken with a Canon 10D, which has now been superceded by the 20D. The 350D is a slightly simplified version of the 20D I believe.

I'm 99% certain all EOS lenses will physically fit, although some Sigma lenses may need to be rechipped as Sigma don't pay the licence fee to Canon and instead reverse-engineer the interface.

Why don't you get the digital back for your Canon. My brother in law has and is very pleased with the results!!

it depends on how many lenses you have if they are few and are old, then consider checking out the competion. if on the other hand you have many lenses, then stick with Canon there good cameras, and don't have the price premium of the Nikon brand.

but do remember if your using your existing lenses they will have a x1.5 magnification effect due to the smaller digital sensor compared with a 35mm film. this effects all consumer level DSLR's.

regarding the Sigma lenses I beleive this was only a problem with the earlier EOS cameras and no longer an issue today, I use a 100mm sigma macro lense without any problems and would continue to buy sigma lenses for use with my D60.

I would suggest though you go and have a go of the various canon DSLR the D30 (3meg), D60 (6meg) are older models and hence have larger bodies which I prefer to the newer smaller body that Canon produced with the 300D, 350D, D10 (all 6meg), D20 (8meg, i think)

My only other recommendation is don't buy the latest DSLR body as it will be supercede quickly and though improvements are significant on paper in actual use theres not a lot in it really for day to day use, it's only when your using the camera at it's limits that any short comings show.

do check out www.dpreview.com for very extensive reviews of all the above models, it's a very informative site.

buy a nikon!!!!

I’ve had a Canon 350d for a few weeks now, here’s my 2 penny worth

Good:
Virtually instant on
Very fast to focus
Virtually instant when taking a picture (after focusing)
Very fast to take the next shot, or string of shots.
Nice honest, neutral pictures, and its sharp enough too.
Easy to navigate menu
Very good battery life (but not AA cells)
Makes a nice noise!

Bad:
It weighs a ton
It’s physically BIG and it’s cumbersome to carry around
Doesn't use AA cells...
Costs a lot of money (in my opinion)

The above is really comparing it to my previous camera, a Nikon 4500 compact with swivel body, its slow do anything, but it does produce good sharp, neutral pictures.
The 350d takes me back to the SLR's of the 80s, BIG camera, lens and flash guns, and a HUGE camera bag :( It is an enthusiast camera and not for really for general use.

If they made a compact with the speed and picture quality of the 350d, well, I’d probably trade the thing in…

I’ll tell you this, its no OM1 :(
