Where do I start? Passed my test in the late 80’s and owned a few cheap jap bikes before work, houses and kids intervened and biking went on hold due to the usual time / cash constraints.

Emerged from the grind of babies / toddlers mucho overweight, still working hard but ready to get a life back. Got really into road cycling (hard training, bit of racing etc) and got lighter / fitter but still had little time left to fuel the bike habit beyond hiring a few here and there and general abuse of dealer test rides!

Jan 2000 comes around and as it’s the dawn of a new millenium change seems in order. Web browsing (not including this site strangely?) and mag reading has re-kindled the flame of biking generally (and GSing specifically) and turned it into a raging fire, so the bullet is bit and a beautiful black R1100GS becomes mine. 12 months of fun follow but fate intervenes in the form of a ‘must buy’ house and the black GS turns into £5k which clinches the deal on the house and leaves me the coldest of cold turkeys.

2 years have passed and there aren’t many days when I haven’t wished I hadn’t sold that beauty – just can’t kick the habit! (To the ex Ducati owner with the dodgy back who came all the way from Northern Ireland to Leeds on the back of a mates red GS to buy it – hope you enjoyed it! Are you on this list?)

But there’s no turning the clock back and you can’t influence the past…………….

Still working hard and short of time but recently decided to try and kill the craving with some cheap off road biking so have been fooling around on an old Yamaha Serow. Funny thing is that’s just made the addiction worse and now the ‘soft drug’ Serow isn’t enough and I need the ‘class A’ hit of a GS again.

Then I found this forum and, together with the looming of the big 40, I just can’t get thoughts of owning another big GS out of my head. Damn you guys – I was nearly clean (yeah right!), now I gotta up my dose – but to what! (BTW – what happened to the rest of the site?)

Have read the various threads about the pros and cons of the 1100, the 1150 and the Adventure and I know no-one but me can make the ultimate decision but, hell, give me your views anyway – it’ll be good to feel part of forum instead of ‘listening in’ from the outside

So here’s the parameters for the benefit of your wisdom:

1. Can’t buy until May (it’s a long story) – possibly prepared to wait even beyond that for the right bike even if it means I don’t get much GSing done this year. What’s another few months when you’re waiting for the dream!

2. Budget = £6k - £10k. A difficult one this (but pretty obviously critical!). Could stretch to the £10k but is this the right thing to do? The heart says yes, the head says pick up a used one for £6 - £8k – you know the debate!

3. Mileage – c5k pa. One or two big trips a year, a few weekends away and the usual spring to autumn rides for fun – all solo. Basically the bike will be for pleasure but as I don’t get that many opportunities to ride, when I do, I like to ride long. All day in the saddle is my idea of fun but the RTW trip is a good 10 years and a few bikes away!.

4. Riding style – steady and safe. As I read on a thread somewhere recently, I ride well within my (and the GS’s) limits cos I ain’t into risking mine or the family’s future

5. Spec – love the tough, ‘overlander’ looks of any GS, definitely want ABS, love black bikes and I’m a sucker for those blue / black rims, the large tank and the generally OTT style of the Adventure. Mods will probably be limited to cosmetic stuff cos I ain’t a good enough rider to discriminate between Showas and Ohlins! But are looks the be all and end all?

Really enjoy reading the posts on this forums – tried the BMW Club in the past and I only went the once! – the stuff on here is fantastic. Great sense of camaraderie comes through loud and clear.

Give me your views – straight from the hip!

Thanks,

Keith

hmmmm...

........I don't like to help people down the long and sorry road of 'addiction' - but it looks like we are all to late to stop you!
Sense says get a 2nd hand one with full service history with as low a mileage as poss. Travel a bit to get what you want. Call all the BM dealers within the areas you are willing to travel to with the sort of price/spec you want e.g.1100GS, ABS, heated grips, Black preferably, Panniers better up to 7.5K or whatever. Get them to call you when they have something suitable. Or just 'Hell give us a ring if you get a decent 1100/50GS in will ya!!' At least if you buy a beaut of a 2nd hand you will have cash in hand should you decide on aftermarket can, spots etc.
Godd Hunting and I hope the 'urge' doesn't get to painful that you buy in to much of a hurry
;)

You can do it !!

Keith,
You can get a 2000 reg bike with 18,000 km in black with abs + all the extras for 8,500 euro. Go to www.mobile.de a look at the bikes. Dont be put off by the lights or the km clocks, both are fixable and you can take a holiday with the money you save.
Good luck with the hunt.

Go for it !!

Keith ,
The thread you read about riding steady was probably from me.
I have had mine [ 2000 GS without ABS] since last Feb and every time I go out on it I come back with a stupid grin on my face that won't wear off for days - and I ride very slowly judging by some of the other guys messages on this site .
I have to say that buying a secondhand one makes most sense as they are bomb proof - spoke to a guy at the NEC who broke the world record for circumnavigating the world on his - [ 2 yr old bike with 53k on the clock ] he did several 1000km rides day after day and his bike never missed a beat .
You can also do many mods to it and this site is the best place to get ideas/ advice about everything to do with the bike - just be careful or you could get carried away and burn a large hole in your wallet .
GET ONE SOON - YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT !!
Steady Eddie

Keith you are definitely hooked:D
We all know the symptoms of the addict :ry mouth, palpitations when you hear the word GS mentioned etc.
Go on get one for your 40th.
Of course everyone here will you their point of view.
Try to decide if you want your very own brand new ,no prev history bike.Even though it will devalue etc

Or as some suggest buy a cheaper"1 careful owner" and getextra's you need with the spare ?? money.

But as steady Eddie suggests all those extras If you think you need them ! set your wallet and trousers on fire.

Gauloises;I agree it makes think at least I have the opportunity to feed my habit:eek:

Best wishes with your choice Keith.

Forget about budgets

Agree with all thats been said Keith. But forget budgets, they mean nothing. Bought my GS in September as a 'complete' bike with panniers, ABS, heated grips, handguards. Thought that would do ... HA!!! Since then I've added a remus can and y-piece, crash bars, adventure light grill and beak - that's before I get to the Touratech bits - sidepanels, oil cooler cover etc etc. Dread to think what I've spent on the mutha but still it goes on ... and don't regret a penny. More grins per mile than any other bike, its the ulitmate big boys toy ....

You are right too, this is a top site

:D :D

'allo mate ..welcome aboard..

..like you said.. the choice is yours...only couple of things i'd throw in..

Probably better to buy NOW...as you'd likely get a better deal...winter and all that..

If ya go new/dealer...at least you have the comfort of a 2 year warranty....which was something that helped me decide to buy a new Adventure...

OK..OK...i lied...it was pure impulse ..i had to have one....

(but the warranty helped ;)

Welcome to the mad house.

Hello Keith,

Welcome to the gsclub...

Buying the GS. I went a slightly different route last year.

I started with the main dealers and had some test rides, told them I may buy a new one, but I was uneasy about waiting lists, costs of extras and the general attitude of "they sell themselves sir so no deals"

Started to look at Dealer second hand stock and realised it was a bit pricey, so looked at low mileage private sale bikes, viewed 3 for sale in MCN, but still didn't buy for various reasons.

Then joined the mad house here and decided just to wait for one to come up that met all the criteria... talked to different owners about ABS, non ABS, what to look for when viewing and 2 months later one came up for sale on the board... 1 year old, GSClub member, still on BMW warranty, all the extras, right price and in black.

Don't be shy, just go along to your local meet and pester the owners there about the do's and dont's and wait for one to come up on here, maybe a long trip to view, but it will be well worth waiting.

Best of luck mate, you won't regret it.
