Whilst setting my valve clearances ('83 G/S) I noticed that while the main part of my rocker arms are a nice bronze colour, the ends where they bear on the valves are (for about 10mm) blued/grey (inlet and exhaust).

It looks a lot like it's heat related, which is consistent with it being the part that touches the valve stem.

The question is, Doctor, is this normal or might it be a warning sign of the valves getting too hot?

Thanks,

Paul G

i don't know, but i think it's possibly a result of heat treating the rocker arms during manufacture :nenau

Nothing to worry about, it's just the result of heat treatment to the pads on the end of the rockers to stop them wearing as they press down and slide on the ends of the valves.
