Discs & Pads

Recently received what can only be described as an indecently good price for a set of brake discs and pads from Trade Direct, has anyone tried either of the following:-

Stealth Discs

Armstrong Pads.

Cooperman

Rear pads

Whilst on the subject.... I've got to replace my rear (!). The web maintenance manual mentions drilling out of rivets etc. But can one get BMW specific EBC pads that fit no probs. Do these EBC ones do the job and not knacker the disk.

I admit I haven't looked yet but I desperately need to change them.

Many thanks

This is the first time I can honestly say stick with the original equipment brembo pads.Ive never used OE before but Im very happy with the brembo's on the 1150

I used EBC's on my 1100 with no ill effect on the discs. It had nearly 40000 miles on the clock when I sold it.

As for my 1150, the BMW front pads are lasting very well and I will happily get original pads to replace them ( 17000 miles and still plenty of life left in them) but the BMW rear pads don't last at all ( 6000 miles max) so I am using EBC's in there now.

I have used EBC pads on my Triumph Sprint ST with no ill effects on the discs.

KEVLAR

Lots of EBC fans so far. Let me give a WARNING.

DO NOT USE EBC KEVLAR PADS.

They are very dangerous. They are like the old organic pads that the Japs used to fit in the 1970's. i.e they DO NOT WORK!!!!!!

My story :- I bought an EBC "Pro-Lite" disc for the 100GS. I thought the Kevlar pads would have been designed to work with it. Shortly after fitting them, I went on holiday to the "Stella Alpina" rally. It rained a lot. The pads could not bite through the water. Felt very weak. THEN, when the rain finally stopped, we decended a mountain pass quite quickly. I found the brake performance to be CRAP. I was having to use a LOT of pressure on the lever. Then the lever came back to the bars!!! Over heated. Thank god for engine braking.
When I got home I changed to Std. pads (which had Brembo on the back!), have been on similar trips with no reoccurence.

Conclusion :- EBC Kevlar pads are CRAP!

I agree with you Howard - would never use EBC Pads.
I stick to OE BMW Pads as they're not dear and perform best.
I get about 20,000 out of the rears and 35,000 - 40,000 out of the fronts on the 1150's.
Must be the engine braking on the big twin - brakes are surplus to requirements, except in emergencies and at junctions.

I guess you don't have to battle the streets of old London town on a regular basis then Johnny:)

Is most of your riding long distance with very little stop/start work?

Bob

You got it Bob - I avoid towns like the plague.
Only use my bike for leisure and touring.
Forward planning and plenty of good observation helps , so does using the Gearbox

Thanks to the levels of traffic I encounter, my rear brake gets a good work out, usually when moving around slow moving or stationary traffic, and the BMW pads don't last. On my old 1100GS, EBC rears lasted 20000 miles under the same conditions as I ride now on my 1150. But I am happy with the mileage I am getting out of the front pads. Should get into the 24-25K mark at the current wear rate.

Forward planning does help a lot, but there is no getting away from the fact that the conditions here are not as conducive to long pad life as nice open and uncongested roads.

Thanks guys

BMW pads then. My fronts are OK too - will probabaly last 25k. The rears have lasted 12k due to filtering technique!!

So whats the price difference? Is it worth going to EBC if OE are of a similar price?

Anyone know?

Genuine BMW pads are around the £25 mark while the EBC HH pads are approx £19.

I swear by the EBC HH pads and will not use anything else, they are kinder to the discs than the OE pads, last much longer and increase stopping power. Another plus point is the lack of brake dust which means you don't have to clean the wheels so often. The only downside is the lack of anti rattle springs.

What about brembo pads from MPS at £18 after all, who makes them for BMW?

I posted a question ages and ages ago about how much use you should expect to get out of the rears.
My riding is 95% heavy traffic, I recon I would still only get about 5-6k out of a set but I've solved the problem,I don't use them in the dry, it's only been in the last few weeks I've started to again. Without using the rear I'm getting about 10-12k out of the fronts.

My rear pads were wearing out at around 5-6K. I'm now making a concious effort to use the rear brake less, the current ones have been in for nearly 6k so I'm watching them closely, I'm expecting to get 7K out of them.

The fronts are EBC HH, unfortunatly, I cannot get my hands on HH rears. I've been told that EBC originally made the HH rears with both pads the same thickness, instead of having one thicker than the other, this caused somebody in Japan to have an accident and the pads were taken out of production. This may well be Bullshit, so if anybody knows where I can get HH rears; could you let me know.
