Ditching the cat' and balance pep

What kind of difference do the de-cat headers offer? Do they improve the whole range?

Not as much as you first spending a bit more time up and beyond the 1500 to 4k mark will do.... without the changes. At least it will be free as you have already paid for the bits you ain't using.

It won't break and you won't die (hopefully).

fitted a remus decat pipe and remus hexacone carbon can plus k & n, i dont believe these company's do any specific research as to performance gains etc cos it totally fecked up the bike, it was bought from a dealership who said no need for pcommander etc as it will compensate which is complete bollocks, you do need a power commander it totally transformed the bike and probably stopped it blowing itself up, it still has the flatspot in top gear roll-ons at 5k

De catted headers will give a noticeable improvement in low down torque. Fitting an end can will not give you anything else but a more fruity sound if that's your bag.

However, in my experience, if you have a non standard end can and remove the baffle, the performance suffers as I think the Boxer like some back pressure going on. Also, fitting a K&N without a power commander starts to seriously affect the fuelling which is probably why skid06 has problems.

So, changing the headers should cause you no problem. I've run Keihans for 67k and the bike runs great:thumb

Ilkleyal has it slightly wrong about improving the bike from factory standard. The factory settings are OK but once you have ridden a bike which has been properly set up without spending a fortune, the improvements are staggering:thumb

You still selling those Keiham headers?

It's easier to tune the carbs on a 1200 without the balance pipe :augie

I have just had a look at these Keihan headers; they are around £325 plus postage. What made you choose Keihan and not Remus, etc?

Keihan are the exact dimensions of the OEM pipes complete with balancer pipe. Remus do not have the balancer pipe and you are paying for the name with Akrapovic in my opinion.

Keihan are also made if Redditch by a great little company and hand welded and polished. Keihan make stainless replacement systems for a lot of old bikes like Airheads, Ducati's Nortons etc and have a great reputaion for quality. Great price too and are at least as good as Remus and Akrapovic:thumb

The de-catted headers certainly make a difference. They smooth out the torque dip and make it rev more freely - making the higher rpm more enjoyable to access.

The end can makes a nice noise when coupled with the headers. Keep the "bung" in though, as taking it out feks up the low down torque.

I'd imagine that fitting a K&N or the like would have a similar affect in terms of fekking things up.

I'm happy with my setup, it sounds nice and goes nice. Couldn't ride a big bike that sounds like a sewing machine.

+1,
best thing I added to the bike, pulls much better in the mid range,
Easy fit, great quality, good price and as I found out when I went in to the factory to buy them, nice people.

14,000 kms on them so far and not a glitch.

Accelerator module helps too:thumb

+2, highly recommended :thumb2

Is the balancer pipe really necessary? Would you say that headers with a balancer pipe in place offer more torque in low revs?
