DIY Tank Respray ???

The reason for changing the tank is that the original one has snapped off one of the fuel filter mounting lugs. As for paint I was thinking of sourcing the BMW Pacific Blue to match the beak etc...

Long story short but basically I want to respray a black metal petrol tank and paint it blue (as in the Tesco's 1150GS blue & white colour blue). A fellow GSer gave me some tips over the weekend but unfortunately I was very drunk and have forgotten nearly everything he said

My intention is to use nitromors to remove the current black finish then give it a couple of coats of white primer (I remembered that bit from the weekend). Then do a couple of coats of the blue.

How does that sound ???

If you have to ask how to do it then my advise is DON'T!
if its not done right it will look crap and devalue the bike. Loads of advise here on how to, but paint spraying is a trade and as im a sprayer i know all the pitfalls that await you. Either live with the black, buy another tank in the colour you desire, or get a tankbag.
The blue and white would be difficult to mask if your not used to this sort of thing. Special masking tape is also required for getting clean sharp lines. Dont use bog standard masking tape the thin paint will creep under and make your job (no matter how well you have done so far) and make it look like a blue peter diy job.

you can get two pack paint in aerosol now. Sounds like a contradiction it being already mixed in the can ( paint and hardener) but apparantly it works. I think it is designed to use the air as a catalyst. If you have loads of spare time and want to have the satisfaction of seeing your own work then go for it. I've recently sprayed all the parts for an old bike I'm doing up and get no end of satisfaction from having done it myself,.Compressors are cheap, the most expensive thing was the paint itself( two pack) although there was some frustration when things didn't go as planned.

Thanks again for all the advice gents. Ended up with another blue & white tank so the respray won't be needed

I'm going to shift the fuel filter to an external position as well when I change the bits and bobs over so once that's done I'll be sorted

See how easy was that, and no nasty chemical reactions, carcagens in your bloodstream, or turning your garage into a paint oversprayed hole.
Glad too help (if i did) :now you have zee tank designed and painted by zee germans! as it schult be!

I've been keeping my eyes open for one for sale for nearly a year now. In that time I've only seen two. One was silly money and the other sold quicker than a quick thing

I've got my 60k service coming in a few hundred miles so that's why the DIY respray was on the cards.

As it happens I'm going to see about using my original tank (with 5x fuel pump plate mounting studs) and see if I can refit the plate after doing the external fuel filter mod without snapping off any more studs. If that works then I'll probably look to sell the other tank on.

Knowing me though I'll probably need the second chance that the other tank gives me (and if it all goes totally Pete Tong then I've got a black tank, the one that I was looking at respraying, that I bought from Fil Schiannini as my last chance)

you should have said - I had a blue and white one with internals for sale a few months ago...

It was a bit pricey - but on the upside it did come with a free 1150GS

Hope you get sorted - let me know if you would like pics of the external fuel filter mod - but I think there's some good ones here already (posted by steptoe I think...)

Well the tank situation has gone 'pete tong', courtesy of TNT couriers, but the fuel filter mod is still on the cards.

I've bought some fuel hose clips (Hose Clamp 13mm re-useable | COA60928) and a metre of Motorworks finest fuel hose (Fuel pipe high pressure (1 metre) | TAA37827) - see Motorworks

Does anyone know if there are any other bits and pieces required ???

What stage do the GS decals go on...before the very final laquer coat?
I gues you need to tel DVLA of the bike colour change if necessary...?

I know that 1150ADV and 1200ADV tank stickers are not lacquered over from new but it's up to you whether you want to lacquer over any stickers you apply to your resprayed tank,to keep things perfectly legal and above board you probably should inform DVLA about a colour change.
