Do I need Swiss motorway tax.

Fine ?

i drove down through Switzerland on my way to Italy, mostly motorway and got through without one then on the way back just about to leave Switzerland and got pulled at the toll exit:blast..:D

What was the charge when you got pulled for not having one ?

Cheers,

I tried to do without the vignette this year, but found it impossible even with maps and GPS as sections of roads become motorway with no apparent work arounds, lifes too short I ended up getting a vignette at the local post office. BTW the customs station at Basle no longer has a non-motorway option, this came as a surprise to me needless to say as its a couple of years since I last passed through. very embarrassing when the Police stopped the motorway to let us exit the country :)

you must of come thru on the german side, on the french entry they mostly let you thru for the 50 odd metres of highway to take the city exit... unless the bloke is a :ronno

Depends which way you come into Basel - come in via france and you don't necessarily need a sticker

They'll always try and get you to buy a ticket and many people do, even when they don't need them (I suspect they're on commission).

When you get through the tent just turn right (signs to 'City, SBB') and you're off the autoroute.

If the ticket guys ask you where you're going tell them 'None of your damn business' or 'Basel' and they'll leave you alone.

They're not cops or customs, despite the uniforms.

I go through there several times a month and don't have disk on my car.

I'm off to CH in a 3 weeks or so. Sadly, the routes/passes I have planned and the time factor I am limited to, means I have to use some motorways to get to some of the passes, purely from a convenience point of view.

1. does anyone have a used vignette I can buy

or

2. anyone want to go halves if I buy one myself? i.e. I'll flog it to you for 50% when I get back at end of June?

Yoy

The last time I was out that way I had a 7 day bike vignette. I can't recall the cost, but do remember it was stuck to the flyscreen of my Bandit and removing it would have caused it to break into lots of little pieces. Maybe they've changed the design since then (it was 5 - 10 years ago) but might be worth bearing in mind)

Well back home now. Didn't need a vignette. Even argued the point with the soldier at the border, who eventually told me to take the next exit to get to the non motorway route. Simply set the sat nav to avoid motorways. Easy.

Just a good job he didn't ask to see my passport, as i had taken my wife's by mistake (and didn't know at that point).

Three of us are travelling from 10 July for 2 weeks so if anyone wants to buy a vignette after that let me know

That is Austria ....

And a week costs 50% of the CH year vignette

A couple of weeks back Swiss customs people were sticking the vignette very firmly to the inside of the bikes screens, it’s pre cut in a circular pattern so if you try to peal it off it will shred. On the plus side the Swiss customs are quite pleased to see you :comfort

buy it before hand ( or take a non motorway border, and buy it at any petrol station) stick it on your jeans etc a few times and lightly apply it to the bike, mine is on the crud catcher.

simply peel off after slowly and sell it on to your mate.:thumb

a bit of heat also really softens the glue and it peels straight off.

I have never bought a Swiss Vignette, You need to enter the country on a non motorway road, once got the gestapo treatment on the border near Chamonix, leaving the country, but just denied using the motorway.

i'm so far ahead, that even if I do get pulled, the fine will be immaterial!

Tax evasion is surely a Swiss art speciality?

Anyone have a telephone number for the purchase of a vignette prior to travel the telephone number I have is out of date and the one given via voice mail is Wrong as I have found out

If you are buying at full cost then do so at the border. If you buy in advance from the Swiss tourist board or other agency then you will be stiffed for a crap exchange rate and about £5 for postage.

It costs 40CHF (under £24) at the border or a Swiss petrol station but at the Swiss Travel Centre they want £27 plus a £3.50 booking fee.
