Do I need to remap to allow for crappy fuel?

Reliving bike trips whilst sat at my desk....
We are going to ride Argentina and Chile later this year: 3 months, Sept to Dec. Its a UK bike and will have a Y piece (with Lamda Probe) to save the cat from the risk of crappy fuel and to save a bit of weight, and I may stick on the Remus revolution can with or without baffle. (Without only because I like the noise, but the bike's longevity is the priority!)

My question is do I need to have the injection re-mapped to suit the Patagonian/Andean air and fuel. A Y piece and/or can will lean the mixture already and the added drop in O2 in the higher altitudes may put my bike's engine at risk. I don't want to whole a piston in the middle of the altiplano!!

What to do? Do I remap or not and what combination should I use?

Cat and Standard can?
Y piece and Standard?
Y piece and Remus (baffle in)?
Y piece and Remus (baffle out)?

Thanks

It's already got a crap fuel setting accessible with the right cat code plug.
- see handbook and dealer for details.

Assuming you are 1150 kitted? Dunno about 1200s.

I'd go Y and std. Def avoid the cat, in case you have to use leadded.

y piece and standard can. I wouldn't bother with the low octane code plug, use leaded or 'super' petrol where you can. (I assume leaded is still available there) Higher altitude = less oxygen = richer mixture, not weaker/leaner. The fuel injection system should adjust itself for this anyway, it's carburettor-equipped vehicles that tend to suffer at altitude.

Read up on steptoe's link mod...it's only a bit of wire with two spade connectors fitted and if you have a piccy with ou of the positions to try, you can adjust it according to what fuel you put in.

(Or more realisically, change it and see if it runs better ;) )

I'd take the cat out for the weight saving sure, but so what if you have to run it on Leaded? The cat will stop working, but it won't affect the bike, and we don't have emissions tests for biked :nenau

Two of my customers have just returned from couple months touring Argy and Chile - they had no trouble with fuelling problems. Both bikes standard apart from Y piece's .
