French law states you must carry the originals but having some copies can be useful when kept in a different place than the originals.

I'd take originals of

passport
driving licence
V5
bike insurance
breakdown cover
EHIC
Holiday Insurance

Generally waving loads of paper in the face of a gendarme and attempting to speak French can be a good defusing technique. They might just feel sorry for you and send you on your way.

Copies can come in handy, especially of your passport. I know someone who was let back into the UK on a photocopy after losing the original.

Documents

Take your originals as i think as said above its the law. I did on my last (and first trip on the bike :)) but also if you have a scanner, scan them and take a copy on a USB pen or CD.

If you do run into a spot of bother, then try to speak french, smile, be courteous and pleasent and you might find it is not as bad as it might be.

A friend was let off a speeding fine when the french policeman spotted his welsh sticker and asked if he was from wales. Turned out he had family near bridgend :thumb

Verbal telling off, but no fine or points!

flippin' eck fellas ,originals, photocopies, discs, memorythingys,AND be nice to french rozzers...........THINK I'LL GO TO SCOTLAND instead!!!!!!
