Generally waving loads of paper in the face of a gendarme and attempting to speak French can be a good defusing technique. They might just feel sorry for you and send you on your way.
Copies can come in handy, especially of your passport. I know someone who was let back into the UK on a photocopy after losing the original.
Take your originals as i think as said above its the law. I did on my last (and first trip on the bike ) but also if you have a scanner, scan them and take a copy on a USB pen or CD.
If you do run into a spot of bother, then try to speak french, smile, be courteous and pleasent and you might find it is not as bad as it might be.
