Title says it all really.

I noticed on a terrifying late night dash to holyhead that my front dip is pants and my rear light is not coming on.

High beam and brake light are fine.

Replaced the dip, but its worked for a while, now dim again and fading, like the 'battery is dying' except full beam/brakelight faultless.

Where do I start looking, fuses, contacts, battery, shorts in the loom somewhere.

Suggestions please, day of bodging ahead, help required.

Thanks in advance

I recently had a problem with my dipped beam and the problem lied with a dodgey earth connection. As I was advised check all the connection at the rear of the light housing are clean and tight. This also goes for the plastic plug which connects into the back of the light housing. You can take the plastic cover off to expose the two female pins which i gave a wee squeeze with some pliers. I connected everything and now my light works fine. I would check these first before tracing faults along wiring looms etc but I am no expert. Best of luck.

Eugene,

Is the front sidelight not working as well as the rear bulb?

I've just had a look at your profile to see what bike you have. I see you work for Leicester University. Are you in Leicester or London today?

Front lights are a bit on the weak side anyway .

Have you tried another rear bulb. They have two seperate elements.

Just because the brake light element works doesn't mean the rear light element is ok .

Similar problem, when i have my lights switched off and pull my front brake, the dip light comes on? Also when lights off brake light works fine, however once i switch the lights on, and brake there is no difference in brightness in the tail light, as if its not working???
Have a new battery, and all other electrics seem fine? Could it be a bad earth?

Sorted

It was a bad contact.

Removed the rear bulb, 2 elements as Steptoe :bow described, saw that one came on with brakes, one stayed off. Pulled out the bulb and cleaned electrode contacts, and on the housing and got better contact, voila.

Top of the lens is clear (presumabably to illuminate you reg so plod/Gatso can increase their revenue more easily) Seems there's a seal there, mine has disintigrated. It might be letting water in, hence causing corrosion. I'm thinking gaffer tap and sod plod, any other helpful suggestions:nenau

Thanks everybody for the suggestions regarding light.

Now I'll go and find something else wrong to mess with.
