Dodgy Hall sensor or.......what???

Hi all - a quick query (1200GS)....last couple of mornings, bike has been hard to start - usually, it's one press of the button, but it has just started playing up. It's happened twice so far - on the first occasion, it turned over, fired and totally died - the starter motor did not continue to turn, even with the button held down. Did this about five-six times, then reluctantly caught and I was able to coax it into life. Once it was warm, seemed OK - no rough running etc. Subsequent starts during the rest of the day also OK. On the second occasion, it just churned over and again, had to coax it into life with a bit of throttle juggling then back to normal. Not the normal experience. Stater seemed to turn over fine, so I don't think it's the battery (though I stand to be corrected!). Could a defective Hall sensor provide the above symptoms? On the second occasion, it had a good run the day before so wasn't left standing for any length of time. Any ideas/suggestions gratefully received!

Given that the new R1200xx series doesn't have a HAL sensor, I doubt that's it!

Sorry - then P/N 12727674201 (crankshaft inductive sensor0 is a figment of my imagination? :augie

No it's not a figment of your imagination, it's just that it's not a HAL sensor. At least not in the traditional sense of the oilheads. I've not heard of any failures of the CPS on the hexheads.

Thanks for that - I assumed that the sensor was a Hall device. But anyway - any other ideas as to my problem, then? Cheers.

I had my share of this.

Things to check:
-At turning the ignition to on, does the fuelpomp give any sound (it should)?
-Remove left panel & round cover. You now look at the fuel pump electronics. Carefully remove that (2 screws. Mind the seal). Is the connector beneath corroded?

These are the "obvious" things for a 1200.

With my bike, like yours, the starter engine run 4-5 times, seemingly without any problem, other that the engine did not start...... Diagnoses at the dealer however DID point to the battery. That was replaced. Since then.... no problem. I's like magic.. (and I still have a strange feeling about it.)

It helps the fuel pump (if it's corroded or dirty inside the tank) to add a bottle of FORTE injection cleaner too!

Good luck

MY 12 has failed to start twice, just turned over and over, but was bump started and was then fine. Both times there was plenty of juice in the battery and it started again immediately afterwards. No idea why.
